Today was just the opposite of yesterday, I did almost nothing this morning.

We did go for a walk around the southeastern route using the new collar and leash. The collar is a 'training collar' per the trainer but I, and most people would call it a choke chain collar. The leash is a two loop one that has the regular loop on the end but then has a second loop near the clasp end also. This allows you to hold the leash in your left hand with it hanging in a normal walking position with the arm fully extended.

This keeps Patches very close to my left side and only slightly in front of my leg as I am walking. I had to correct her a couple of times as she was trying to pull forward from that position but a snap of the chain got her attention VERY quickly and she learned that it was best to not pull.

We then went past a home that had a big hound, perhaps blood hound, that was barking, running along the fence and jumping up on it. When Patches pulled toward him and started her usual reactive behavior I once again snapped the collar with a stern NO. It took a couple of these to convince her that she was not to pay any attention to the dog and we went on our way.

So far it seems to be working as the trainer told me it would. What I know for sure is that it is the most progress that I have been able to make since I have had her. She is now walking by my side where I want her which the trainer said was a first requirement. She also gets the message that she can not react to every dog that she sees. Time will tell!

When we got home I went to the Club House for coffee/social hour once more. The usual cast of characters with the main topic of the day being the large number of tornadoes that have struck so early in the season. I am so happy to not be in tornado country!

President Obama has stepped in it once more. It seems that every time he turns around any more he is getting into another controversy that will cost him votes, this time he has tread on the toes of the environmentalist. The very same group that he tried to buy when he killed the Keystone Pipeline. On this issue the Occupy group is sounding almost like right wingers, what is the world coming to?
"After decades of sidelining the once-thriving American timber industry and taking the food out of the mouths of loggers' children to allegedly protect the spotted owl, the green bureaucracy is still not happy and has declared war on the environment," the director of the Occupy Occupy D.C. movement, David Almasi, said in the release. "One owl is being sacrificed for another. Where is the respect for the laws of nature? The one thing we do know from this travesty is that the Endangered Species Act is out-of-control and desperately needs to be reformed."

The wind started blowing last night soon after sundown and is forecast to do so until tonight sometime. The temperature when we got up was 37° but with that wind blowing the wind chill was 27. We did not walk.

I took Patches to the dog park for her morning toilette. This was a mistake, she wanted to play rather than do what was necessary so I was out in that cold a lot longer than I wanted to be.

She found a tennis ball that I tried to get her to play with a few days ago and decided that this morning was a good time to pick it up and run with it. All the time giving it a good chewing. She then stopped, put her front paw on the ball while still having a good grip on it in her mouth and tore it in half. This was all done in about 2-3 minutes.

We did get back home soon after that where I fired up the Wave heater. At 7:00 I went to the Club House for coffee but had the heater back on when I returned and it was on all morning. The high for the day is forecast to be in the upper 50s with some promised increase in the next few days to back in the 70s. I'm ready!

Almost all the big casinos in Pahrump are now owned by the same person/company. I had breakfast at Terrible's Lakeside earlier this week and stayed at their RV Park two years ago; today it is re-opening with the new owner. I don't know what the new name might be but I don't think it will remain Terrible's because they still operate other casinos and gas stations.
Veteran Las Vegas gaming figure Blake Sartini has gained preliminary state approval to become the biggest slot machine route operator in Nevada.
The Nevada Gaming Control Board has recommended approval for Sartini and his Golden Gaming to buy from Affinity Gaming its slot machine route and two casinos in Pahrump.
Sartini told the board this would give him 8,500 slot machines at 650 locations, and he would become the largest casino owner in Nye County. He already owns the Golden Pahrump Nugget and is acquiring Terrible’s Lakeside Casino and Terrible’s Town.
Then we have this breaking news regarding euthanasia in the Netherlands. There are many that are all for this in the United States with some of the same, I'm guessing, opposed to executions. The procedure used in the Netherlands is the same as that used in the the United States for executions by lethal injection yet here there are those that oppose the method on the grounds that it is 'cruel and unusual punishment'.
A controversial system of mobile euthanasia units that will travel around the country to respond to the wishes of sick people who wish to end their lives has been launched in the Netherlands.
The scheme, which started on Thursday , will send teams of specially trained doctors and nurses to the homes of people whose own doctors have refused to carry out patients' requests to end their lives.
If the team is satisfied that the patient's motives are genuine, they will contact another doctor with whom they will start the euthanasia process.
"They will first give the patient an injection, which will put them into a deep sleep, then a second injection follows, which will stop their breathing and heart beat," De Jong said.

The low this morning was 28° and that happened just about the time we got up and went out for our walk. I had Patches off leash on the same route that we took last Saturday that has us go past the VFW into the huge clear land to the northeast of the Park. We had loose dogs confront us when we did the 2 mile square in that direction so will limit our walks to the southern part where I can turn her off leash.

When we got back home I un-hooked from electric and went to Saddle West Casino for breakfast. Got an acceptable Hevoes Rancheros at a VERY good price. I didn't look at the bill, just the total, but after leaving the restaurant I got to thinking that I was not charged for coffee.

Then went to the UPS Store where I had some junk mail that didn't even make it back to Desperado. It all stayed in their trash can. Last stop was at Smith's where I picked up another batch of groceries for the coming week. By noon it was in the lower 60s with a forecast of near 70 today and upper 70s by Monday. Much better!

I put a lot of those purchases to use right away by making up a salad that should last me for 3-4 days. It will be a cold salad but I needed to cook the Oroz Pasta and the Shrimp then add some cut green beans, thin sliced red onion and sliced mushrooms with some of Paul Newman's Balsamic Dressing.

Went past where I thought a dog groomer was located so I could stop and make an appointment but did not see it where Google had shown it on the map, maybe closed? I did get the names and addresses of two others from the Park Office after I got home and will get Patches an appointment next week. She is starting to smell too doggy! I'm not sure what she has to say about me.

I am feeling better the past 3 days now that I'm back on ibuprofen, in fact this is the best that I have felt since back in mid December. The right hip still hurts some when I have done our walks and the shoulders are still sore but not the level of pain that they were. The knees are almost pain free both when walking and during the night when they had hurt a lot only a couple of weeks ago. Much better!

It was warmer this morning but not by a lot and I felt colder than I did yesterday. It did warm up faster by mid-day and may reach the lower 70s as promised.

Our morning walk took us around the southwestern 2 mile square in a clockwise direction. This had us pass a dog that is kept tied to a clothesline run which allows him to reach almost to the road edge. I kept Patches on the far side of the road and with 2-3 stern snaps of the training collar she settled down to sit by my side and watch the dog bark at us.

She also did VERY well with going past the horses that caused her to react last week. I only had to correct her 1-2 times and she sat quietly as they walked up to the fence to take a look at her. A small victory!

This was much better than when we met another dog last night on the Park street as we came back from the evening potty walk. The other dog lunged at us and started barking and Patches ignored my efforts with the training collar for the first 4-5. Finally she sat quietly but it was NOT a successful meeting. A large defeat!

My neighbors to the south has not appeared to be at home since I moved in. This afternoon they arrived with a travel trailer that is only slightly shorter than the one that was already on the space. There are now two trailers that completely fill its total length. Patches was very calm about their moving in so I hope she does not cause a barking problem when I leave her for coffee hour or other short periods.

We walked the northwest 2 mile square this morning. Patches will either learn to ignore other dogs by doing this route or she will grow to hate it and me along with it. There are dogs along each of the ½ mile sides of the square that want to bark at her.

She wants to bark back and lunge at them but I am now doing my best to correct that behavior. Sometimes it takes 4-5 snaps of the collar to get her to sit and ignore the other dogs continued barking, running along the fence and general hell raising but she will do it.

Timing is everything as anyone knows that has ever participated in a rain dance. The same thing with correcting Patches. If I'm too late in doing so she will have taken all the slack out of the collar and my efforts are wasted by just pulling her around rather than getting her attention with the snap. The one effective snap is the one that works the rest are simply me trying to get it right.

When we got home I disconnected from electric and we went to Terrible's Lakeside for breakfast. I did, Patches waited for me in Desperado. They still have the same signs up so you would not know that there is now a new owner. The breakfast menu was the same, no change in uniforms; maybe the changes will come very slowly?

We then went to Desert View Hospital here in Pahrump. That is where the VA Clinic sent me to get x-rays of both shoulders. It is also where I will go on Wednesday to get an MRI of those same shoulders. They are both better but still sore enough that I know that they are not 'right'.

Stopped at a dog groomer on the way home. Not open on Monday. I'll try them again on Wednesday after I finish with the MRI and breakfast. I hope I can get in at that time and I'll sit and wait for them to 'do her'.

The promised warmer weather has arrived. It was up to 70° by noon with the morning low almost up into the promised 40s. It was much nicer while we out on our walk than the near freezing mornings we have been having. Patches is loving it; taking up almost all of the couch, on her back with belly basking in the sun.

Normal activities prevailed for the remainder of the day after getting home. I did finish getting all of the March Will Rogers weekly articles ready for linking and have started on the month of April. That is a normal routine but not a daily one.

No walk this morning. I could hear the wind blowing when I woke up at 04:00 this morning and thought then that it would be a good rest day. When we got up it was not blowing too bad but there were High Wind Warnings for 30-40 mph winds with gusts of 60-70 mph.

The winds did get bad in the afternoon. The weather station here at the Park has quite recording but a nearby station has recorded gusts of 55 mph. The blowing dust has obscured the mountains in all directions. One of the lattice panels in the storage casita porch for the space that I am in blew out of its frame and I managed to secure it before it blew away or caused other damage.

Patches did not seem to be her usual self this morning either. She was very happy to just go for a potty walk and come back for more sleep. She has been subdued all day and I don't think it is because the wind is blowing.

My big achievement for the day was to get laundry done. The washers and dryers here are probably the cheapest that I have used in all of my stops. I may even do laundry more often because of that it is hard to tell.

A day to stay inside and rock-n-roll with the wind gusts!

We got a very light rain at sundown yesterday that left all the cars in town, including Desperado, mud streaked. The wind died down but did not stop all night nor has it quit today. The projected high is to be 55° with a promise of warming tomorrow and then back into the 70s on Friday.

We went out only for the morning potty walk. It was just above freezing and the wind chill was 21°. Had the Wave heater on for about an hour until we had to go to the Hospital for my MRI appointment. Still very cold with the wind and I could see that the mountains to the east were carrying a fresh dusting of snow from last night.

The MRI was a new experience for me. If you tend to be claustrophobic it could be a bit daunting since it can generally be described as being put in a 36” pipe and then have people pound on it. The noises were very loud, all of them being strange to me and not anything that I had expected. It rook 15 minutes for each shoulder and I was done.

Stopped at my UPS Store and picked up the package of pills that VA had sent. This was ibuprofen, acetaminophen and a lot of fish oil. I'll see what I get billed for my copay and if any or all of it is cheaper I'll buy my refills at the local market.

Then stopped for breakfast at the Golden Nugget for breakfast before going to Artistic Pet Grooming. I lucked out and the woman there was willing and able to take Patches right then. I sat out in the parking lot and did some web browsing until she finished. Patches was a good client and has been invited back anytime even if it is just for a visit, the groomer said she was a joy to work with.

My last stop was at a U-Haul, Mail Box and Propane place about a half mile from the Park. You can get propane here at the Park on Wednesday IF you get over to the tank between the hours of 10:00 and 11:00. My guess is that they don't do to much business here.

We then stayed inside and tried to stay warm. I'm looking forward to those nice days again and am pining for the weather that we had in Ajo!

The forecast was correct it was warmer this morning at 37° with the high moving into the upper 60s. The low in the 40s and highs in the 70s still to come but then to be with us for the extended forecast. A much nicer day than the past two with more on the way!

Patches and I walked the southeast square clockwise this morning. There is only one dog on this route and he was not out this morning so Patches was able to do the walk undisturbed. That did not last however.

When I returned from having coffee I did not pay attention to what was going on and opened Desperado's door while there was a guy walking his dog only 50' away. Patches was out and on the dog in a flash, not an attack but her usual rush at any dog she sees.

There was no harm done and when I told her to get back in Desperado she obeyed as quickly as she had left. The guy walking his dog took it all in stride and could see that no harm had been done. Patches is going to learn a very painful lesson if I can not correct this behavior and it will not be me that teaches it to her but some dog that does not take kindly to being run over in her enthusiasm for a meeting.

It almost reached 40° for a low this morning but I felt that it was colder than that. Warming up to the low 70s by this afternoon which is very good. We are also back to clear sky with no wind which is also very good. Now if I had Desperado washed it would appear that the storm never happened.

Patches did quite well this morning when she went past the barking dogs on our northwest square route. We did it counterclockwise today which put her across the street from the most vocal barkers but still I was pleased with how she reacted.

The News of the day were the Jobs numbers and the Greek bond swap; I have more to say about jobs below. The bond swap has triggered default insurance which may bring about some 'black swans'; it is going to prove interesting to see how that shakes up the market next week and in the future as the details become known. We can now also look forward to Portugal becoming the next Eurozone crisis.
Greece’s use of collective action clauses forcing investors to take losses under its debt restructuring triggers payouts on $3 billion of default insurance, the International Swaps & Derivatives Association said.
A total 4,323 credit-default swap contracts may now be settled after ISDA’s determinations committee ruled the use of CACs is a restructuring credit event, according to a statement distributed today by Business Wire.
The Bureau of Labor has released their non-farm job numbers for February, an increase of 227,000, which the media has reported as being good news and confirms the trend of increasing job growth.

When you look at the Bureau's historical data, by month, for Total Employed (which includes farm workers and has not been manipulated quite as much) the trend is also in evidence: December ADDED 176,000, January ADDED 847,000 and February has added 428,000.

There was some bad news that Unemployed went up by 48,000 but the number of Employed went up by far more than the increase in the population (I look upon this as being good news). The good news about the increase in Unemployed is that it was a result of the decrease in the Not In The Labor Force which went down 310,000.

For the past three months the Not in the Labor Force numbers have been very favorable for President Obama's re-election, if he can maintain this trend to October 2012 he will be able to claim that he has brought the country back to Full Employment by Election Day. It did not happen this month but the key is to continue to move the Unemployed to Not In The Labor Force.

The decrease in the Not In The Labor Force was not enough to change the Unemployment Rate this month but unchanged was still good news for President Obama. If he can continue to get the Rate to decline as the November election approaches I think he will get his second term. This assumes he will keep us out of a nasty war with Iran.

The days have warmed up into the 70s as forecast but the morning lows are still cold. It was only 35° this morning when we went on our run/walk.

Patches had a great morning running in the fields to the northeast. She looked like she was enjoying it more today than the previous two times that we have been on that route. I know she is a Happy Dog because I can hear her snoring while in her favorite posture on the couch.

There was a French Toast, Sausage and Juice breakfast at the Club House this morning. I just had my coffee as usual. Not a big fan of French Toast, can not remember when I last had it and have not missed it.

By noon it had warmed up to nearly 70° so I went to work on a task that I have been putting off. Namely the task of dumping my holding tanks and filling the fresh water tank. I could have gone longer before dumping but was running out of fresh water. The job is now done and I'm probably good for another three weeks.

I'm sure there is something I should have done today but I'll do it tomorrow, or maybe not.

This morning was warmer by one degree at 36 but the day high will be in the low 70s as forecast. Next week should follow this same pattern with slightly warmer lows. Then the weekend is to be cold and rainy once more, a typical spring in Nevada.

Because of Daylight Savings we will now be getting up at 6:30. There is the same amount of daylight now at 6:30 as there was before at 5:30 so I can not see that there was any saved. The only thing that I can see is that we changed all of our clocks.

Patches did VERY well when she passed the one dog close to the road on our southwestern route. However, she then spoiled it all when she saw two dogs in the Dog Park near the entrance to the Park and home. She did finally settle down, sit and quit barking but it took repeated snaps of the collar. I think she is getting better but it is certainly not an overnight transformation. I can not be too hard on her after she got me up at midnight last night and said in no uncertain terms that she needed to go out; that avoided a messy clean up job. She can be a Good Girl!

When we did get home I disconnected from electric and went to Terrible's Lakeside for their Biscuits and Sausage Gravy. The new owner can change whatever he might want but I hope he leave that alone.

It was grocery shopping day again at Smith's. In the parking lot was a American Cycling van with a closed utility trailer. I went over and visited with the woman that was packing up their food purchases for the 4 day bicycling tour of Death Valley. I never did a tour with them but did buy some of their maps and donated money for the development of the Continental Divide Cycling Trail.

At the Park there is a RV Wash Station that I took advantage of this morning before going back to my space. It needs a more through job than what I did but looks better than before and I can now see out of the windows once more.

Part of the groceries went into a big salad that will last me for about 4 days, I then have enough ingredients for another one of like size. This one is pasta, broccoli, green pepper, sun dried tomatoes, kidney beans and Spanish olives with a Balsamic vinegar dressing. When I serve it I'm going to sprinkle some blue cheese on top. It will accompany a thick cut roast beef and sharp cheddar cheese sandwich on sourdough.

For the past week or so I have been reading the Archives of Fred Reed at his site Fred On Everything. My Democrat readers will hate him, whereas most Republican readers will dismiss him as part of the Ron Paul camp. Here is what he has to say about Liberals in his Fred Columns #260; I'll post what he says about Conservatives tomorrow.
The liberal believes that the group has a right to control every aspect of everyone’s life. He may permit many freedoms, but only those of which liberals approve. Abstract or general freedom holds no appeal for him. The limbic instinct of the inveterate liberal is to harry, regulate, and stifle the individual, of whose penchant for independent action he is profoundly distrustful.
Of course he does not think that he is stifling and imposing, but improving and instructing. For the unwilling he has no patience. The liberal is a creature of the homiletic herd, like a gnu wielding tracts, and believes in the “the masses,” in their infinite plasticity and potential for uplift and betterment, guided by him. Particularly he wants to uplift those who do not want to be uplifted, as their independence might be infectious. He sees himself in the capacity of the patient mother of a society of wayward two-year-olds who must be diapered, formed, and taught.
Thus his love of government in all its meddlesome intrusiveness, pedestrian witlessness, and unrestrained drive for dominion. He—or rather more often, she—knows that without coercion, some people will not do as they ought: that they will besot themselves, behave wrongheadedly, teach their children heaven knows what, and march off in all different directions. They must be restrained. And since the restrained usually find ways of evading the constricting tentacles, ever more and more-detailed laws must be enacted to thwart each new escape. Thus the government will eventually come to dictate the altitude, material, color, shape, texture, and compressive strength of toilet seats.
Liberalism is a feminine creed, embodying the kindness, short horizons, modest familiarity with reason, and placidity of the sex. It wants to buy people nice things without reflecting on how to pay for them. It believes in goodness but doesn’t often get much further, being benevolent while falling short of beneficence. As good mothers will, it tries to protect everyone from everything.
This is why the Democratic Party unrelentingly promotes security. Children must wear helmets while riding bicycles, swimming pools must not have deep ends, canoeists must wear life preservers, we must outlaw guns, and smoking, and drinking while driving, and we should all wear sunscreen so as to avoid melanoma. We must worry about safety until there is nothing left in life but its preservation.
With the seldom recognized totalitarianism of the female, liberals seek to impose happiness, whether desired or not, by therapy and mood-altering drugs, whether desired or not. People must be happy, must be safe, must be forcibly socialized to a life of orderly boring routine whether they want it or not. The herd will provide for all; the price is that all must yield to the herd. Thus the liberal aversion to any form of self-defense, whether conducted with a gun or a baseball bat. Self-defense is distressingly individual.

This morning was a lot warmer because we had a cloud cover during the night. Had the same light wind that has been blowing for a couple of days now. The high temperature back up into the low 70s. A pretty nice day with more to come. Still a colder weekend but the forecast has now postponed the rain until Monday.

We did an out and back route along the western and southern legs of the northeast square this morning. Because of Daylight Saving the eastern leg, Homestead Blvd, has a lot more traffic on it than I want to put up with. The distance is the same and we still had one barking dog for Patches to get over.

Daylight Saving Time has also changed coffee time in the Club House. Before I would arrive at 7:00 and be there almost alone for 15 minutes. Now I arrive at about 7:45 and by 8:00 I'm almost alone again.

I'm not so sure that President Obama's position regarding the contraception mandate, his battle with the Catholic Church nor his phone call to Ms Fluke has done him any good with female voters. I don't know who his advisors are, or maybe he does not listen, but sticking his nose in the Fluke – Limbaugh fight was about as smart as his meddling in the Boston policeman and professor issue early in his term. No Beer Summit this time with Fluke and Limbaugh although Rush has said many times that he would sit down and have a beer with Obama.
During the first few days of February, about a week before Obama declared a so-called "accommodation" to the contraception/abortifacient mandate, a Washington Post/ABC poll showed Obama's approval rating at 50 percent, with 46 percent of Americans disapproving.
Then, from March 7 to 10--a week into the national media firestorm surrounding Rush Limbaugh's degrading remarks about Georgetown Law student and liberal activist Sandra Fluke--Washington Post/ABC conducted another poll. It found Obama's approval rating at 46 percent, down four points from February, and his disapproval rating at 50 percent, up four points from February.
Here is what Fred Reed has to say about Conservatives in his Fred Columns #260; I posted what he said about Liberals yesterday.
Conservatives by contrast believe that the individual has a God-given right to rob others. As the liberal has good intentions without rationality, the conservative has rationality without good intentions. He worships at the shrine of personal freedom, by which he means only his prerogative of making money regardless of damage done to others. He dislikes government as he dislikes anything that might inconvenience the pursuit of private rapine. He believes in the sanctity of private property, unless someone buys the lot next to his and builds a hog-rendering plant, when he will see the merits of zoning.
Conservatism is a masculine faith, hard-eyed, coldly logical, frequently bloodthirsty, and typically out of touch with any reality beyond the commercial. The conservative has no concern for the less fortunate, who he believes probably deserve it anyway. There is in conservatism a strong streak of social Darwinism.
Conservatives are fond of war, partly to be sure because of the consequent flow of contracts but also because war is an age-old, genetically mediated hobby of males. A robust conservatism embodies all the brainless pugnacity of the male. Note that history is chiefly the record of armed bands of men poking each other with sharp objects, after which the survivors drink mead and tell themselves how glorious it was. The Iliad, Beowulf, the Song of Rolland, and the Old Testament for example all read like the annals of teenage gangs in Chicago.
In the conservative mind, martial derring-do is wrapped like a birthday present in notions of glory, valor, sacrifice, virility, and transcendence. Women and most Democrats seem to see it in terms of deeply rooted and intransigent idiocy.
Conservatives conspicuously lack aesthetic sensibility, a love of beauty being a concern of women and homosexuals. Show the conservative an Arcadian idyll of rolling fields and ancient oaks and he will see a site for several garish hotels, a parking lot, and a Wal-Mart. Like a congenitally deaf man watching the inexplicable sawings of a symphony orchestra, he is puzzled by conservationists. A dolphin, an elephant, a panda he calculates in terms of cans of dog food at thirty-seven cents per, and, for an additional three cents a can to cover legal contingencies, he would pack his grandmother. He sincerely has no faint idea why anyone might object.
He is likely to be a Christian, though not to the extent of letting his faith moderate his misbehavior. For him faith is a justification, not a limitation. While conservatives generally do not engage in herd behavior (note that they seldom hold demonstrations, while liberals seldom stop) they do believe in military aggression. Christianity provides moral cover as he does things that might otherwise raise nagging doubts, such as dropping large bombs on other people’s cities. I was only following orders, from on high.

The solution to the conflict between the two groups should be obvious to all thinking people, if any: Drop them down an abandoned oil well, pump large amounts of potassium cyanide after them, and stuff Oprah into the hole as a plug. A cap of cement couldn’t hurt. The silence alone would justify this wise deed.

The weather today has been a repeat of yesterday and the day before, perhaps with increasing winds but they are still not too bad. Nevada without wind in the spring would be a very unusual event.

Patches did well when she was confronted by two dog on our clockwise route around the southwest square. She did even better with the single dog that is on the cloths line tether because it did not bark at her. She also did very well going past the two different groups of horses that are on this route. Progress, maybe.

She has also started to respond better to the Quiet Command when she starts to bark while inside Desperado. Not good but better. I saw the Park Host this morning and asked her if anyone had complained about her yet and she said that no one had. So far so good.

Doing nothing for the rest of the day but blog reading, some novel reading (this one is slow and very long) and web surfing. Maybe get some Will Rogers weekly articles ready to be linked?

A Wall Street Journal Opinion California's Greek Tragedy by Michael J. Boskin and John F. Cogan offers up a telling picture of where California is going and where President Obama wants the nation to go by emulating it's policies. It just might be that California is the 'canary in the coal mine', by watching what happens there perhaps we can avoid it on a national scale.
Many Americans fear the federal fiscal train wreck will turn us into Greece. But, barring major change, they need look no further than California to see what this future portends. Relying on ever-higher taxes to fund payments to an outsized population of benefit recipients is a recipe for exporting prosperity*. That is one California trend that other states emulate at their peril.
After running a $5 billion deficit last year and another likely deficit this year, Gov. Jerry Brown's budget increases spending next year by $7 billion and finances the higher spending with income and sales-tax hikes. Specifically, he's proposing a November ballot initiative raising the state's top income tax rate to 12.3%, making it the nation's highest, and raising the basic state sales tax rate, already the nation's highest, to 7.75% from 7.25%.
The ballot initiative's $31 billion, multiyear "temporary" tax increase is larger than the "temporary" hike it replaces and its income-tax hike is retroactive to Jan. 1, 2012. Worse, it doubles down on excessive reliance on high-income taxpayers, especially their stock options and capital gains, which are taxed as ordinary income. During economic good times, it's not unusual for the state to collect one-half of all income-tax revenue from the top 1%. This extreme progressivity leads to boom-bust cycles of rapidly rising revenue followed by complete collapse.

No walk this morning. The past couple of days my right knee and hip have been hurting more that usual by the end of our 2 miles. This morning they were hurting when I woke up and had not got out of bed yet. I thought a day of rest for them might help.

What it won't help is the pain in my left shoulder and hand that has been there for 3-4 days now. The shoulder is about as painful as it had been just before I left Ajo. The hand is worse; then it was mostly the middle finger but now it is also the index finger. I can not close either of them to make a fist, they are both swollen and hurt all the time.

Putting on and taking off a jacket has become job for me. Trying to tuck in the tail of my shirt is a long process and incompletely done. The improvement in how I felt when I got here to Pahrump has not lasted. It is about a month now before I see my PA again and find out what the x-rays, MRI and blood work (yet to be taken) might disclose.

Patches has taken the no walk in stride which she does not always do. It might be that she was looking for a day off also, I never can tell.

Here is another quote from Fred Reed's Fred On Everything dated November 5, 2005 that was written at the time about the Moslems burning Paris but is also insightful of the economic situation in the Good 'Ol USA here and now.
People and governments by nature temporize, avert their eyes from forthcoming catastrophe, eschew the needful but unpleasant, and do not readily believe that the status quo can abruptly change. But it can, and does, and is. Meanwhile absurd intellectuals write pointless articles in glossy magazines. Soon it will be too late for civilized answers.

We did not walk again this morning but I did take Patches to the Dog Park. There she got another tennis ball and ran with it, chewing on it all the while. She didn't destroy this one but soon would have if I had let her have her way with it.

This seemed to burn off enough energy that she waited patiently for me while I was doing my thing in town. First stop was at Saddle West Casino for breakfast. They also have a very reasonably priced menu as well as a buffet plus a $2 off the buffet price three times a week.

I then went to the UPS Store and checked my mail again. Most of it stayed in the trash can with only the Escapees magazine making the cut to come home with me.

I was a little early for the 9:00 opening of Super Cuts so I used that time to start on the magazine. When they opened I was the first in the door and as it turned out the only customer that they had while I was there. My hair was WAY too long and in need of a cut for over a month but I keep putting it off. I feel so much better, it is too bad that the weather is going back to cold in a few days.

You would not think that was going to happen when today is going to be in the upper 70s and the forecast for tomorrow is 75. Then we are to get rain and highs of 55 on Sunday and Monday but back into the low 80s starting Thursday. That is a normal Nevada spring!

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the statistical and analytical agency within the U.S. Department of Energy just released its report, Sales of Fossil Fuels Produced on Federal and Indian Lands, FY 2003 Through FY 2011. This report shows that total fossil fuel production on federal lands is falling, natural gas production on federal lands is falling, and oil production on federal land fell in 2011 ending two years of increase. The report tells a different story than what President Obama would have us believe. The President does have an advantage however, he can tell his delusional tale over and over on the Campaign Trail whereas the EIA Report will simply gather dust.
Crude oil production on Federal and Indian lands decreased 13 percent from 739 million barrels in fiscal year 2010 to 646 million barrels in fiscal year 2011. Production of crude oil on Federal lands is dominated by offshore production, which fell by 17 percent in fiscal year 2011, mostly notably due to government actions taken following the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. These actions include a moratorium on offshore drilling by the Obama Administration, followed by a permit moratorium. Only recently has the Obama Administration leased any federal land offshore to oil and gas drilling.
The big picture is clear that government policies undertaken by the Obama Administration have produced a significant decline in offshore oil production on federal lands in fiscal year 2011. That is certainly not a way to increase domestic production of oil and keep oil and thus gasoline prices in check.

Patches and I got out and did our walk this morning before the winds picked up. There is an 80% change of rain tomorrow and the clouds began blowing in this morning.

We did the northwest route clockwise which took us past the most dogs and the closest to them of any route. Patches did VERY well considering. She did not ignore them as I would hope she will at some point but she also did not react as she has in the past. This was with a minimum or correction which was the best part.

There was also good news coming from my right knee and hip. The rest may have done them some good, they were not hurting when I finished the 2 miles as they had been earlier this week.

I did not expect rest to make a difference with my left shoulder and hand but they were also better today. I still can not make a fist but the visible swelling in the first two fingers has decreased and there is less pain. Getting a jacket on and off was still a slow process but not nearly as painful.

Nothing else happening here. The News is even slow today. The media is striving to keep the massacre in Afghanistan 'above the fold' but they have so little information it has been very difficult to do that. President Obama has a big problem with Afghan relations, his repeated promises of seeing that the guilty will be punished is not going to cut it if he keeps saying it for months and months on end.

There was a very low black cloud cover this morning although it was not too cold. The wind made it feel colder and I was not prepared to get wet which looked like what was going to happen. We did not walk. Patches had fun with a tennis ball in the Dog Park again and almost destroyed it before I could get her to leave it alone and go home

I went to coffee and stayed for about 45 minutes. When I came out the wind was still blowing but the sky had cleared up a lot and the threat of rain had broken up. That didn't last long and by noon I got the first few drops of rain with harder rain visible all around me.

The showers then came and went starting at about 2:00, never very hard but cold and wet. This should be a timely rain for the wildflowers if we get some warm days next week as promised.

Had the Wave heater on and off throughout the day. It was never very cold but never warmed up much either, stayed in the 50s. That is what the forecast is over the next couple of days with more rain tonight and tomorrow. There is still the promise of 80° highs starting on Thursday thru Sunday then cooler and more rain.

I did even less than usual with more time on the couch with Patches. She can be on the floor and as soon as I get on the couch she wants to be up there also. I guess she is protecting her property, she is on it more than I am.

I did make a little progress with the Will Rogers weekly articles for April. It is soon to be here and I'm not my month ahead with that task as I like to be.

We walked this morning but I cut it short because a cold wind was cutting through me. The temperature was 37° but the wind chill had it down to 26. Patches did not object to the reduced walk in that cold and has been a fixture in front of the Wave heater since I got back from coffee.

Very overcast and rain threating all day. Just not a good day to be outside for neither man nor beast. Still in the 40s through the early afternoon with a forecast high of 57 that I don't think it will reach.

When the clouds lifted briefly I could see that the mountains to the east had a fresh dusting of snow. Perhaps this is the last of that for this winter, then again maybe not.

Most of today was devoted to staying inside and staying warm. Reading blogs, news items and doing a little bit more work on the Will Rogers weekly articles for April. A rather normal day for my current lifestyle.

Patrick J. Buchanan wrote an essay Rush Limbaugh and the New Blacklist that said the following in part. The first paragraph is a summary of what has happened to the culture in this country over the past four decades. The PC crowd have won and those that oppose them are "the beautiful loosers".
To control the politics of a nation, control of the culture is a precondition. For who controls the culture defines what is moral and immoral, and what is heroic and villainous. And if you can set limits on what journalists write and broadcasters say, you can shape what people think and believe.
Through history, frightened establishments have dealt severely even with peaceful challenges to their power, which is why Socrates was forced to drink poison, Christ was crucified, Sir Thomas More was beheaded and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was sent to the Gulag.
When Rush Limbaugh called Sandra Fluke a “slut” for demanding that Georgetown Law School subsidize the $3,000 women students annually require for birth control to exercise their sexual freedom, the media that piled on Rush objected less to the term than to the target he picked: one of their own.
Bill Maher routinely uses far more odious terms on Sarah Palin. Yet his $1 million gift to an Obama Super PAC was welcomed by agents of the same president who phoned Fluke to console her over Rush’s remarks.
Rush apologized. But the left still campaigns to have his voice stifled and censored, by threatening advertisers of his radio show with boycotts if they refuse to drop him.
Thus does the left honor the First Amendment.
As shown in HBO’s “Game Change,” John McCain in 2008 ruled out attacks on Barack Obama’s 20-year ties to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the Chicago preacher of “God damn America!” fame.
Why? Wright and Obama were black, and such attacks might agitate the latent racism of white America. The Republican Party censors itself so as not to antagonize a cultural establishment that wants to see it dead.
“Beautiful losers,” my late friend Sam Francis called them.

The forecast for more rain today certainly was not apparent this morning. The sky was cloud free. It was cold but with no wind so we did the out-n-back route to the south and east.

Patches did well with the two dogs that rush up to their fence, barking up a storm and running back and forth as we walk by. She still wants to respond but not nearly as much as she did before so I think some progress is being made.

The wind did pick up later in the morning and clouds began to build over the mountains to the north and east. It also stayed cold like it did yesterday, still in the 40s at noon with a projected high in the upper 50s once more. It only got up to 54° yesterday and I'm guessing it won't be much over that today.

This has me, and Patches even more so, in front of my Wave heater for a good part of the day. Lots of time spent on the computer with a little couch time thrown in.

If medical issues had not convinced me to come to Pahrump when I left Ajo I may have stayed at the North Ranch Escapee Park in Congress, AZ. In reading Al's blog at The Bayfield Bunch I found that they awoke to snow yesterday at their 'new' AZ home in Congress. Then while at coffee this morning one of the other attendees said that there had been heavy hail in Why, AZ (near Ajo). So I may not be in such a bad place for the weather as what I left or thought about moving to.

The following is from Obama’s 0% Doctrine in TomDispatch.com, a blog written by Tom Engelhardt. He points out the unchecked power of former President Bush has now been assumed by President Obama yet you hear no condemnation now as you did during the Bush Presidency.
Did you notice in the President's interview for The Atlantic earlier this month he did NOT say, “We don’t bluff.” His formulation was: “I don’t bluff.” And that “I” should not be ignored. The Bush administration promoted a cult of presidential power, of (as they called it at the time) a “unitary executive.” No one in the White House uses such a term these days, any more than they use the term “Global War on Terror,” but if both terms have disappeared, the phenomena they named have only intensified.
The Global War on Terror, with its burgeoning secret military, the elite special operations forces, and its growing drone air force, controlled in part by the CIA, should be thought of as the president’s private war. In addition, as legal scholar Jonathan Turley wrote recently, when it comes to drone assassinations (or “targeted killings” as they are now more politely known), Attorney General Eric Holder has just claimed for the president the “authority to kill any American if he unilaterally determines them to be a threat to the nation.” In doing so, added Turley, “Obama has replaced the constitutional protections afforded to citizens with a ‘trust me’ pledge.” With terror in its crosshairs, war, in other words, is increasingly becoming the president’s private preserve and strikes on the enemy, however defined, a matter of his own private judgment.
It is no longer a matter of “we,” but of a presidential “I” when it comes to unleashing attacks in what has become a global free fire zone for those drones and special ops forces. War, in other words, is increasingly lodged in the Oval Office and a commander-in-chief executive. As the Libyan intervention suggested, like the American people, Congress is, at best, an afterthought — even though this Congress would rubber-stamp a presidential act of war against Iran without a second thought.
Then this is what Fred had to say in Fred On Everything on February 16, 2007 during President Bush's second term. Then candidate Obama railed against Bush's policies but changed none of them when he gained office except to make them even more intimidating.
On examination, most of the measures purportedly taken to stifle Terror don’t. Opening mail without a warrant? It’s pointless once the terrorists know you are doing it, but effective in intimidating honest citizens. The same is true of warrantless wiretaps and searches. Does the gutting of habeas corpus make us safer against terrorists? Or merely suppress dissent by citizens?
The whole business looks remarkably like malign vaudeville, like mummery intended to accomplish two things. The first is to persuade the foolish that the nation is At War. Actually only the president is at war. The second, and I would like to be wrong about this, is to train the public to obedience. The formula is simple: Keep’em scared and you can do anything. It works. Americans are rapidly becoming accustomed to Soviet-style surveillance, to the state’s power to search and spy without restraint, to being barked at and ordered about by low-level federal employees. People deserve what they tolerate.

It warmed up slightly this morning. No wind here but the snow was blowing off the summit of Mt Charleston like you see in pictures of Mt Everest. The weather gurus think it will reach 70° for a high today but I'm not convinced, it is still in the 50s in the early afternoon.

Patches and I did a tour around the perimeter of the Park for our morning walk. We have done this a couple of times for an evening potty walk also. It is ¾ of a mile and offers the chance meeting of other dogs which is good practice for us both.

It was shopping day so I disconnected from electric and went to Terrible's Lakeside first for breakfast. They have discontinued their breakfast buffet but the menu remains the same. This morning I got their Skillet which was more than I wanted at one sitting, I brought part of it home and will add a salad for 'linner' today.

Stopped at the UPS Store to check on mail and only had one junk mail piece from Good Sam. It stayed in the trash at the store, They have been sending me something four times a year ever since I stayed at a Good Sam Park back in the summer of 2010. I would send it all back to them but they never include a Business Reply Envelope.

Then did my grocery shopping for the week at Smith's. Got the makings for a salad much like last week and fixed that as soon as I got home. No meat of fish this week only a couple of different blocks of cheese. Just didn't have any desire for more meat or fish.

The past couple of days have been much better for my shoulders and hands. I can almost make a fist with my left hand again and the left shoulder is like it was at the beginning of the month, not pain free but so much better. The right hip and knee are better also if I don't try to do too much, the rest days that I gave them helped a lot.

Vice President Biden has summed up the case for Obama's reelection by saying: “Osama bin Laden is dead, and General Motors is alive.” I doubt that President Obama wants to use that as his Campaign 2012 slogan and he may want to tell Joe to drop it. I, and there are probably many others, could care less that Osama bin Laden is dead or that General Motors is alive (perhaps on life support from the Federal Government is more correct). Neither of these made my life any better and if they had not happened I doubt that my life would be any worse.

It warmed up by a couple of degrees again this morning, still below 40° but slowly creeping up to that level. The forecast high for today is 77 which I don't think will happen, the forecasters have been about 5° too high all week. It should be in the 70s again however and that is good.

Patches did well going past the dogs on todays route. No serious correction was necessary and she never responded in kind to any bark. Then when she got home the first thing she did was vomit on the couch. I had just about got that cleaned up and she vomited on the other end of the couch.

I put her in the bathroom and shut the door where it would be easier to clean up anymore throw-ups while I went to do laundry and have coffee. I went back to check on her after about 20 minutes, she was barking to be let out and greeted me as if nothing had happened. She then went through the rest of the day in her normal happy dog manner.

I know she must have picked up something as we were walking this morning and ate it. I didn't see her do it but she will try and eat anything. Dumb dog!

Got the laundry done with only one small glitch. I loaded up a washer and then put my money in the one next to it. When my washer did not start I took everything out and luckily moved to the washer that I had put my money in. Did not realize what I had done until I closed the lid and saw that the new washer was working. I'm getting old!

On March 11th I wrote about seeing, and talking to, an Adventure Cycling tour leader at Smith's. They were preparing for a week tour of Death Valley. This morning I read in The Pahrump Valley Times that a 67 year old man disappeared while on that tour. He left a group campfire at 8:00 pm the second night saying that he was going to go to bed but was not in his tent the next morning and it did not appear he had slept there during the night. Seven different organizations have lent their efforts on the ground and in the air to help locate him but as of yesterday he was still missing. Very strange!

President Obama came to Nevada today to give Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid some support for his zealous encouragement for green-energy subsidies in Nevada. I'm sure he will use this as another opportunity to talk about the job creation benefits to be had from green-energy projects. You can also be sure that he will not mention the number of full-time employees at this one nor will he focus on the 300 part-time jobs that came and went during its construction. Those part-time workers are now probably back on 99 weeks of unemployment benefits.
President Obama will tout investments in “renewable” energy Wednesday at the local Copper Mountain Solar 1 plant, although the plant has only five full-time employees.
The plant, owned by San Diego-based energy company Sempra, was built in late 2010 at a cost of $141 million. Funding included $42 million in federal-government tax credits and $12 million in tax-rebate commitments from the state of Nevada.
In addition to wanting to create many new jobs, President Obama has claimed green-energy investment will decrease America’s energy costs and reduce the country’s dependency on foreign oil. In Boulder City, however, renewables have produced no lower energy costs. Instead, in late 2009, the city approved a 35 percent rate hike, while power generated by Copper Mountain is to go to Southern California — rather than serve Nevadans whose taxes helped finance the plant.

I was wrong about yesterday, the forecast high was to be 77° and we reached 78. This morning was just over 40, which is the 'magic' low temperature for me and the expected high to be in the low 80s. I think it might make that but with the wonderful breeze that we have had in the early afternoon it should be just about perfect.

Patches did not seem quite up to her normal enthusiasm about a walk this morning and neither was I. Therefore, we did the Park perimeter route with a stop at the big Dog Run at the half way point. I put the backpack on her this morning to see how she would walk with it and under control of the choke chain. She did great!

I received an email from a friend and High School/University classmate today that made me think how lucky I am to have what I think is Psoriatic Arthritis. He will be going into surgery on Monday to have a brain tumor removed. They will then determine what additional chemotherapy and radiation treatment will be necessary.

I have been back on ibuprofen now for two days and the hands are much better. The shoulders are still painful at times but even better than they were a couple of days ago. As I say, I am lucky when I hear about what others are going through.

The quote below is not just about what YouTube and Facebook will allow to be posted on their sites. It is an organized attack coordinated by Media Matters. Media Matters for America is a Web-based, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. Media. They are actively trying to remove Rush from broadcasting, this is far and away from monitoring, analyzing and correcting conservative misinformation. This is pure censorship and blackballing in the tradition of McCarthy at his height of power.

It is also not just about Rush. IF they can kill him, or his ability to broadcast, then they have sent a very strong and clear message to all conservative radio talk shows that they are next and they are coming for them. The conservative view point must be silenced!
Any sacred cow whines to YouTube and Facebook and as a result, whatever the sacred cow is whining about is immediately taken down.
But a song that openly calls for the killing of Rush Limbaugh apparently doesn't offend YouTube or Facebook, in the least.

We did get up into the low 80s yesterday but it was very pleasant with the breeze. This morning the low was in the upper 50s but the forecast high is to be a bit cooler in the upper 70s. We also have more of a wind today than the breeze which was so nice yesterday.

Patches did the northwest route today with her backpack on. This is the route that has had the most dogs barking at her along the way but this morning they must have all still been asleep. Only one confrontation that she handled fairly well.

She stayed closer to a heel position with the backpack than she does without it. Almost no tension on the leash at any time whereas without the backpack she has some forward tension on it.

I payed for my second month here at the park today. Their months are all four weeks in length so I'm now payed up through April 19th. If everything goes well at my VA appointment on April 13th I will probably stay here for another week and one day then leave on the 28th. I have a dental appointment in Reno on April 30th that I would like to keep.

The man on a bicycling tour who disappeared after walking away from a campfire in Death Valley National Park last week was found dead near his campsite Tuesday night. The news article said that an autopsy would be performed to determine the cause of death.
George Kohler, a personal trainer and avid cyclist, was found in a shallow gully about 1 1/4 miles east of the Mesquite Spring campground where he was staying in the northern part of the park, said Carma Roper, an Inyo County sheriff's spokesman. It appears that Mr. Kohler left the campfire and took off cross-country on foot," said Cpl. Terry Watterbury, a Sheriff's Department search and rescue coordinator.
Kohler had seemed off-kilter that day and before the ride began, said Kimo Goree, a resident of New York City who was on the tour. Kohler fell three times on a warm-up ride the day before the trip, he said. "It is very unusual for a strong rider to fall three times in one day," Goree said. He said there was no indication Kohler, who was wearing a helmet, had hit his head. On the first day of the Death Valley tour, Kohler lagged behind the other riders, Goree said. "I think we all recognized that George needed a little bit of assistance," he said.
I have copied a portion of the article Terrible Two for Obama Health Law by Chris Stirewalt for FoxNews.com. I think the President is going to have as much, if not more, of a problem reeducating the electorate on his energy policy as he has had with ObamaCare. The electorate is even more passionate about their price of gas than they are about health care. When push comes to shove they will buy gas before they will seek health care.
“[President Obama] went wrong by unloading too much too soon. He came forward with three trillion-dollar proposals. He had cap and trade, he had health care and he had the stimulus package and that was more than America could swallow. That led to the outbursts once they had a chance.”-- Former Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter, talking to The Hill>.
Rather than being a part of a larger remaking of American government once promised, the health law became the definitive element of Obamism. When given multiple chances to get away from the law... The thinking was that if Republicans could block the law after so much time and effort, he would be forever branded a weakling and a failure. Team Obama concluded that enacting an unpopular law was bad, but that trying and failing would be worse.
And that’s when Obama gave up his brand for good. Obama ran in the general election on good government, bipartisanship and innovative thinking. He ended up sacrificing all of that in the name of victory on a law that ended up looking very little like what he had originally called for. Rather than being transformative, the Obama presidency had become just an amplification of what voters already disliked about Washington. When Obama packed the East Room of the White House for a partisan pep rally with chants of his campaign slogan for the signing ceremony two years ago today it was a fitting finale. It was hackish, not historical.
Bill Clinton had the political acumen to change course when his audacious agenda ran aground during his first term. Obama has instead concluded that his task was to reeducate the electorate. Unpopular at its inception and unpopular at it’s passage, Obama would convince Americans that they really liked its law. As he is now doing on energy, Obama has concluded that his task is to disabuse Americans of their views, not accommodate them.
We don’t know what end Obama’s energy education will meet. But we know where his health education effort stands today. On the two-year mark of the most significant law passed in Washington in 30 years, the president is standing silent and his re-election campaign minimizes the sweeping parts of the law and focuses on narrow provisions that could have easily passed with bipartisan support. Health law education has turned into health law evasion.
Only 23 percent of employers in a survey by human resources consultants Towers Watson were confident that their firms would be offering health benefits a decade from now. Four years ago it was triple that. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that 20 million workers will lose their private insurance in the next decade.
With such uncertainty looming, most Americans would like to see the law either repealed or partly undone. And given the way the legislation was made, it’s understandable that voters would have little confidence in it.
The justices of the Supreme Court may yet bail out Obama and strike down the law, or at least big parts of it, before the election. But at the two-year mark, the legislation remains the unhappiest success of any modern American politician.

This morning the low was in the upper 50s once again but the forecast high is to be 80. With the overcast that we have had all day I don't think it will make it but it has still been a very nice day. Possible chance of rain tomorrow.

Neither Patches nor I had any desire to do a longer walk this morning. We did do the perimeter of the Park with a stop at the big Dog Run. There Patches actually did run a little bit this morning. She usually does nothing but sniff and mark her territory in a dozen places but this morning she grabbed up a rope toy, also very unusual for her, and ran with it like she was having a good time.

I found a follow up quote to the one by Chris Stirewalt that I posted yesterday. This is from Fred Reed with the words in bold changed by me from the original.
Because Obama has a reputation for being intelligent, one might make the mistake of expecting him necessarily to behave intelligently. No. Brains only provide the means to be more elaborately and ornately stupid. The smart merely make more complex mistakes. Historically, horrendous misjudgements have usually been the children of good minds. When you mix acuity with fanaticism, you get an ungodly stew almost certain to end in disaster. This may be worth thinking about.

Patches and I got in our out-n-back walk to the south and east this morning with the overcast mostly cleared. Was about the same temperature that it has been the past few mornings. Then starting in mid-morning the wind started to blow and become stronger as the day went by. Blowing in some possible rain clouds from the east that may dump on us tonight.

Patches seems to be a Happy Dog. Has been laying in the sun snoozing or on the couch in her favorite position snoring up a storm.

The coffee group does not meet on Sunday but I went to the Club House and there was a pot of coffee available. Sat and had a couple of cups with only two others passing through just to get a cup to go.

More time reading blogs and the Column Archives of Fred Reed. I have also started on the Column Archives of Karen Kwiatkowski. If my liberal readers start in 2003 as I did, they will love going back to those glorious years of hating Bush. She rips President Bush, almost everyone in his administration (particularly Rumsfeld) as well as most of the conservative talk show hosts. Conservative readers will be asking, “What has changed?”

I am also still working on Social Statics but it is slow going. As is the long novel that I started about a month ago; about half way through it now. Maybe push to finish it before I leave here so I can exchange it, there is a huge exchange library available.

The rain came last night at about 9:00 but it did not amount to much. It sounded like a lot because of the blowing wind, gusts up to 55 mph, but not much fell. It then quit; rain and wind both like someone had flipped a switch.

There was a dusting of snow on the eastern mountains again. It looked like it may have been only 750-1000' above the Pahump Valley. There was also a dusting on the mountain peaks to the west/southwest that I have not seen with snow on them in past storms.

It was still damp and colder this morning so I took patches to the closer and smaller Dog Run for her morning potty. There she found another tennis ball that she wanted to chew on while running around like a young pup. When she is doing this she listens to nothing I say: no Command is obeyed, all she wants is for me to try to take the ball away from her.

When we did get back to Desperado I disconnected from electric and went to Saddle West for breakfast where I tried their buffet. It is pretty simple at a decent price but nothing to get very excited about.

Then stopped at Wal*Mart to get a pre-paid minutes card for my TracFone and some poop bags for Patches. That is almost next door to the UPS Store so I stopped in there to check on my mail. The only thing that I got that was important was my bill from VA for the visit with my PA back in February, the prescriptions that she gave me and the x-ray charges.

Last stop while in town was at Smith's for groceries again. I also used my reward points that would expire at the end of the month to fill up with gas. Did not completely fill up but got 35 gallons at 30¢ discount per gallon. I'll completely fill up near the end of April before leaving town, assuming that I do leave then.

The following excerpt is from the British newspaper The Independent of London. I have not seen Mikhail Muhammad quoted as saying this in any American newspaper, Associated Press nor Reuters. I wonder why? I also wonder what those news outlets would be saying if it were a white militant group that was calling for whites to join them to administer 'justice'?

Is recruiting a lynch mob now acceptable since Attorney General Holder gave the New Black Panthers (“his people”) a pass on the voter rights case in Philadelphia? I have not seen him weighing in on this as being an incitement to violence. Nor have I heard any of the pundits that claimed Sarah Palin was doing so by her saying she was “targeting” for defeat Democrats running for Congress. Where are they with their condemnations now?
It was announced by Mikhail Muhammad, leader of a small militant organisation called the New Black Panther Party, who said he was seeking up to 10,000 black men willing to form a militia to find Mr Zimmerman and administer what they regard as justice.
Asked if he was inciting violence, Mr Muhammad said: "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth." To the sound of cheers from followers, who wore black uniforms, he promised: "If the government won't do the job, we'll do it."

Another pretty nice morning. Then by noon the wind had picked up again bringing with it some high cloud overcast.

Patches walked the gauntlet of barking dogs along our clockwise route of the southwest square without much correction today. IF I can get her to sit before she goes into her reactive mode then she will usually behave fairly well when walking past them. Maybe she is getting better.

This was also another routine day. The only thing even close to different was the salad that I mixed up for my next four days. A modification of what I had last week; this one being pasta, chayote, sun dried tomato, green onion and shelled edamame with a balsamic dressing. I add a couple of cloves of chopped garlic, some walnut pieces and a sardine when I put the salad on a plate.

In the pleadings before the Supreme Court this quote by Justice Kennedy was found. I am somewhat encouraged that the individual mandate will be thrown out but the pleadings don't mean much it is the vote that counts. Justice Kennedy seems to have identified the main point and that is the one that President Obama promised he would deliver “a fundamental change in the USA”.
JUSTICE KENNEDY: But the reason, the reason this is concerning, is because it requires the individual to do an affirmative act. In the law of torts our tradition, our law, has been that you don't have the duty to rescue someone if that person is in danger. The blind man is walking in front of a car and you do not have a duty to stop him absent some relation between you. And there is some severe moral criticisms of that rule, but that's generally the rule.
And here the government is saying that the Federal Government has a duty to tell the individual citizen that it must act, and that is different from what we have in previous cases and that changes the relationship of the Federal Government to the individual in the very fundamental way.

The high cloud overcast was still with us this morning as well as the wind. Not extremely cold but cold enough with the wind that I did not want to be out in it for almost an hour.

Therefore, we only did a walk of the Park again with a stop at the big Dog Run. Meet the same dog and owner twice; first time was a surprise close encounter that had Patches in full react mode. The second time I had a chance to get her to sit and she was better behaved but still reacted.

I told you about my 'linner' salad yesterday which is my main meal of the day. I have been having oatmeal with raisins most of the time for breakfast when I don't go out. This week I have cooked up some eggs and frozen home fries to which I have added onion for a skillet egg dish. I do get tired of oatmeal rather quickly, even with raisins added. HA

The News has settled into a rut of Trayvon and Supreme Court ObamaCare coverage. Nothing new to report but the media doesn't have anything else to break the usual three day cycle so they keep recycling these same two stories.

The high cloud overcast was gone this morning but even better yet the wind was gone also. Nice and cool, maybe the perfect temperature for a walk.

So, that is what we did. Patches confronted her toughest route for barking dog confrontations, the northwest square. She did it well also. I corrected her only slightly and she behaved very well when she saw a dog in the small Dog Run at the Park. The dog did not bark at her, which helps, but she was content to just look and not react.

I saw the owner at coffee later in the morning and she said that Patches had behaved really well. I said that I had been coaxing her somewhat and she said “Yes, I heard you talking to her all the way past us.”

The only thing that I can point to as an accomplishment today is making some more progress on getting the Will Rogers weekly articles ready for April. This is not difficult but is time consuming and tedious.

Making good progress on reading all the Fred On Everything Archives. Still slow going with Social Statics and my current novel. I also need to start reading my Monthly blogs again before I get too far behind. Then there are naps to be taken since the weather has become nice once again. Busy, busy, busy!

Read Will Rogers column 88 years ago: March 30, 1924

There was ever reason for me to go walk this morning except for one. I did not feel like it. The high today is forecast to be in the low 80s but there are High Wind Warnings issued for tomorrow. Possible gusts in the 50 to 70 mph range and the high dipping back below 70 on Sunday. Not a great weekend.

Patches seems to have accepted the day off as welcome also. She has not been bugging me about going out and has been in her favored position on the couch snoring happily. Occasionally rolling over for a belly rub or moving into the passenger seat where she can sun bath for a while. She does have a tough life.

I did get motivated enough to finish the Will Rogers weekly articles for April. Even started on the month of May but did not do much.

In an Analysis/Opinion essay by Charles Hurt for The Washington Times this is what he had to say about President Obama and the Trayvon Martin killing.
Last Friday, Mr. Obama wandered into the killing of Trayvon Martin. Aided by his ignorance of the situation, knee-jerk prejudices and tendency toward racial profiling, Mr. Obama played a heavy hand in elevating a tragic situation in which a teenager was killed into a full-blown hot race fight.
Americans, he admonished, need to do some “soul-searching.” And then, utterly inexplicably, he veered off into this bizarre tangent about how he and the poor dead kid look so much alike they could be father and son. It was election-year race-pandering gone horribly wrong.
This coming from the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize recipient "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples". For the past three years he has demonstrated what a farce that award was with this being the latest proof.

Patches and I got out for our walk around the northwest square early enough to avoid the increasing winds. It was more than a breeze but not up to strength yet.

By noon the winds were in the 20-25 mph rang with gusts of 30-35 mph and Desperado was beginning to rock-n-roll. The strongest gusts will probably come after sundown with a forecast that they will then die down around midnight.

Another routine day. I did some more work on the Will Rogers weekly articles for May but still have a lot left to do.

In Social Statics by Herbert Spencer he discusses the right of free speech and could have been writing about our cultural prohibitions of same which we designate as being not “politically correct”. This is what he had to say:
..crude ideas of causation...are the ideas of those who infer that unlimited liberty of speech is improper, because productive in certain states of society of disastrous results. It is to the abnormal condition of the body politic that all evils arising from an unrestrained expression of opinion must be attributed, and not to the unrestrained expression itself. Under a sound social regime and its accompanying contentment, nothing is to be feared from the most uncontrolled utterance of thought and feeling. On the other hand it may happen that where disease exists, exposure of the sore places of the state to the cold breath of criticism, will superinduce alarming symptoms. But what then? A Louis Philippe, a General Cavaignac, or a Louis Napoleon, may find excuse in a corrupted and disorganized state of things for espionnage, censorships, and the suppression of public meetings. But what then? If a nation cannot be governed on principles of pure equity, so much the worse for the nation.
