A couple more rain showers during the afternoon with clouds all day made for another day with no A/C or fan. Then around 8:00 last night we got a good old fashioned thunder storm with flashing lightning and booming thunder and rain for around and hour. Lots of standing water this morning so it was probably an inch or more.

Yesterday was also the beginning of the Labor Day Weekend so the Park filled up last night. That meant a LOT more dogs out walking around this morning giving Patches some worries. She has been quit good and was VERY good while on our walk this morning when she was confronted by a dog off leash. I got her to sit and let the other dog approach her and they had a very agreeable dog meeting. I think she is getting better - maybe.

The big accomplishment of the day was beginning the preparation of October links for the Will Rogers weekly articles. I also did some more catching up with the archives of a blog that may join my Monthly reads, then again it may not.

A not so minor accomplishment was the dumping of my holding tanks and taking on fresh water. I will probably not need to dump before leaving here but will do so. As I have said before I like to travel with empty holding tanks and about a ¾ full fresh water tank.

The novel that I'm now reading caused me some confusion at the beginning. I always turn to the back of the book to see if there is a glossary or other information pertaining to the story. In this case there were two family trees that seemed very odd with one person living an exceedingly long life.

Then I find that the narrative point-of-view is provided by one of the participants but he should be dead according to his date of birth in the family tree. Many of the other characters are dead but they appear as spirits in the present and converse with the narrator. Once I got past this small issue I have found the story to be very well told. I'll disclose the title and author when I finish it IF I think it worth your time.

This is from The Automatic Earth blog of August 30. Big Ben didn't drop anymore dollars from his helicopter while in Jackson Hole, WY. I think he is playing chicken with Congress and the President with regard to the 'financial cliff' and the election. I don't believe he cares who wins the election but wants to put pressure on Obama and Congress to act because the Fed can not 'fix' the economy.
Draghi and Bernanke have been anointed with the power to dole out trillions of dollars and euros more, and they'll hand it to whoever's bought the best seats in the house, claiming straight-faced that it's the only way to save the US, the eurozone, the economy and the planet itself.
That this money will need to be paid for at some point in time doesn't seem to be a concern for anyone anymore, or at least it's not addressed. As far as politicians, bankers and media are concerned, it could come from somewhere anywhere they don't care. They're all convinced they won't be the ones who have to foot the bill, and the way things are going they're probably right.
Nothing we will see in the coming months will provide any real solutions to what ails either the American or European economies. There are no politicians left in positions that make any difference at all who are where they are to serve the best interests of the people they are supposedly representing. And central bankers, of course, represent no people at all; they represent industries and special interests, under the guise of being independent.

We had another big thunderstorm yesterday afternoon. This one was more lightning and thunder than rain but it did keep it cool so no A/C was needed. The 5 day forecast is for it to remain in the low 80s which is good. When I move back to Pahrump I'll be giving up this much better weather for highs in the mid-90s once again for 2-3 weeks. Not so good.

As I have said before, this section of the Park is very much transit occupied. Almost full every night and then almost empty by noon again every day. It is even more so during this Holiday Weekend.

We got in a good walk this morning in high 40s temperatures and the way thigs look we will have low 80s for this afternoon. That is about all we did today; Patches slept most of the day away and I read (maybe a nap happened I'm not sure).

Morris Berman, a social critic, wrote this in his blog on Febuary 2, 2008 during the time he was a Visiting Professor at the Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico City. It is interesting that although he is probably as far left as Fred Reed is staunch Libertarian how many views they have in common. I also find it interesting that they have both moved to Mexico a country that the majority of Americans hold in low regard.

The thing about this quote that I like is his description of Americans being mini-imperialists with no respect for the space of other people. Yet we Americans are quick to complain about how 'foreigners' always crowd into our space.
The truth is that macro-aggression is not really possible without a cultural basis of micro-aggression. For America to stop being an imperial power, arrogantly imposing (or attempting to impose) its will on the rest of the world, its individual citizens have to stop being mini-imperialists; they would have to respect the space of other people. But this is not very likely to happen, because it–i.e., nonrespect, in the form of extreme individualism–is the very fabric of American social life, and thus, in effect, invisible. This conforms very well to Marshall McLuhan’s famous quip, that the last thing a fish is aware of in its environment is water.

It was cold this morning. I'm not sure how cold but I think it was below 50° and felt even colder. I slept in for about 10 minutes this morning and was not excited about getting up when I did awaken. Thought that maybe a shorter walk this morning was being called for and the best I can tell Patches agreed.

It started to warm up around noon but then a nice breeze came up and it was another very nice afternoon. The forecast is that I'm going to have this kind of weather until I leave.

A very quiet Labor Day. The upper Park, where I am, was ½ empty by noon today. I do expect to see it fill up later in the day but then the rest of the week should be peaceful. The Casino and Hotel have had their parking lots full during the past couple of days also so somebody still has some money.

James Howard Kunstler was a very, very strong supporter of candidate Obama in 2008. That support has now all gone away and he has joined me in my belief that only a third party will be capable of addressing the general malaise that this country is in. His third party is not a political one however it is the real state of affairs – Reality. I think he may be on to something however; the Reality Party may come into being by 2016.
Meet the new third party in national politics: Reality. Reality is the only party with an agenda consistent with what is actually happening in the world...Reality will be the winner of the 2012 election no matter what the ballot returns appear to say about the bids of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney to lead the executive branch of the government. In the vicious vacuum that national party politics has become, the Republicans and Democrats are already dead...

Compare and contrast the platforms of the Republicans and Democrats with the Reality Party:

The two major parties both propose that the colossal machine of everyday life in America can not only run indefinitely, but continue expanding, and include ever more member people who trade ever more schwag...Reality knows we have entered a long-term compressive economic contraction; that there is no way we can persist in the current living arrangement; and that the necessary outcome to avoid immense human suffering can be described as the downscaling and re-localizing of everything we do.

The two major parties regard the rule of law as optional, especially in money matters...Reality knows that the absence of the rule of law is suicidal. Reality is incapable of pretending that it doesn't matter.

The two major parties pretend that so-called "entitlement" programs can be simultaneously reformed, improved, and abolished - that is, you can have your cake and eat it (with ice cream) at the same time you throw it in the garbage. Reality rejects this incoherent juggling act and proposes that Americans better just make other arrangements for old age, routine medical care, and daily bread.

The two major parties both proclaim that the USA is verging on "energy independence." Both parties are lying. Reality knows that the shale oil "game changer" is a mirage.

The two major parties believe that the foreign wars are good for business as long as you can minimize the casualties on our side and keep war news off the TV. Reality knows that war as currently practiced by the US Military is a failure if 1.) you can't control the terrain in the foreign theater of operations, and 2.) you can't control the behavior of the foreign population.

It was warmer this morning than it has been the past two but the high for the day is expected to remain in the low 80s. That is good.

Patches and I did a slightly shorter walk this morning. I then made up for it by walking over to Cactus Pete's for breakfast. Returned home and read my Daily bogs before going to the General Store to pick up food for the next few days.

I am confused by time here in Jackpot. If you check, as I did, you will find that it is in the Pacific Time zone yet the restaurants in both Cactus Pete's and Four Jacks operate on Mountain Time. I'm not sure about the General Store so I always wait until it is 8:00 Pacific Time before going over there.

Beginning to think more about leaving here for Pahrump. Also thinking about when and where I'll go when I leave there. It can get very cold for a day or two during November in Pahrump so I would rather not be there then. It is all going to depend on what the Orthopedic Clinic in Las Vegas decides.

If they want to cut then I can only hope that they do it quickly and I can be gone before it does get cold. If I had my druthers I would leave in early November and stay somewhere along the Colorado during Nov – Feb. Going back to Ajo would also be fine except I'll need another dental cleaning at the end of January and will need to be back in Pahrump in April. Devoted quite some time today looking at my choices.

The liberal media and the President's surrogates have taken Romney to task for not speaking of war at the Republican Convention. I think he did however when he said: Obama has thrown Israel under the bus. I am very interested in what the President might have to say in his acceptance speech about war, particularly with regard to Iran and Israel.

IF I hear nothing supporting Israel then I'm of the opinion that they may be the October surprise this election cycle. They may try to take out the Iran nuclear threat without the US being complicit and place the President between a political rock and hard place.

This is from an article by Wayne Allen Root for FoxNews.com:
On Thursday, August 30, Time magazine disclosed that U.S. Joint Chiefs Chairman, General Martin Dempsey, told reporters in London, “I don’t want to be complicit” if Israel chooses to conduct a military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. No top general would ever say anything like that without orders from the White House. Those are clearly Obama’s words, not Dempsey’s.
Israel needs not only missile shields, but also military help from the U.S. to protect her civilian population and her very survival. Even worse, the X-band radar system in the Israeli desert aimed at Iran and linked to Israel’s anti-missile systems, to warn Israel of incoming missiles, is manned by and controlled by U.S. military personnel. Without cooperation from the U.S. military, Israel is literally “flying blind.” The ability to save Israeli civilian lives and shoot down incoming missiles is in the hands of Barack Obama. And his message is clear, “We don't have your back."

It felt colder this morning, cold enough that I was wishing for the wool shirt that I ordered yesterday. I have had a Woolrich wool shirt for years that I should have retired from service last spring but will do so now when I get my new one.

The day high temperatures are still in the low 80s. Most afternoons I have been getting a breeze so the A/C has been off. Just lazing on the couch and letting the breeze lull me into a nap. It really is a hard life but if someone must do it it might as well be me.

Cooked the last of my cod today. This will give me 3-4 'linners' that are at this point of an unknown quality. I changed the sauce recipe partially as an experiment and part by necessity. The experiment was to use crushed tomatoes rather than diced the necessary part was to do without capers, the General Store does not have any (they do not carry fresh or frozen fish either).

Did normal stuff, however the past few days I have been working with Patches to obey the Heel Command. This morning I added a treat to the training routine and she went wild over Beef and Cheese Pooch Wraps.

For a 100 yards after she had received her treat she was dancing along beside me looking for more treats and then every time I would tell her to Sit she thought that merited one also. I knew from her Obedience Training days that she is a treat whore so I have to be judicious in how I reward her.

This quote is from Morris Berman's blog of September 10, 2009 The Parable Of The Frogs which is recommend reading in its entirety. This is only a sample of what he has to say and supports Winston Churchill's observation: You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else. I'm starting to think that President Obama has been trying to get us in the abyss so he could transform America. He may be able to do it with a second term but even if he does not I think the time will come.
In the case of the United States, the imposition of rules and limits on individual behavior to protect the commons is not, at present, a realistic prospect; the population is simply not having it, end of story. But how much longer before this freedom of choice is regarded as an impossible luxury? In fact, no crystal ball is required to predict the future here. The tragedy of the commons–what Hardin called “the remorseless working of things”–is that a society like the U.S. won’t undertake serious changes even when it is sitting on the edge of an abyss. It has to actually be in the abyss before it will entertain such changes; i.e., it has to be faced with no choice at all. It seems unlikely now, but things are probably moving faster than we realize.

High overcast all morning which helped hold the temperature down until noon and then the wind picked up. This made for another very pleasant day.

Patches did well with her Heel lesson again this morning. I only treated her one time but she is looking for more that is for sure. She comes back 'near' my left leg upon the command but does not quite get the idea that she should be sitting in a position facing the same direction I am. She will be pointing off in almost any direction that happens to please her at that moment.

The Lower Park really filled up last night for some reason. There were only 4 spaces open this morning. One of those is next to me on the east side and it has had a traffic cone blocking it for almost a week now. That has made it very nice for me.

The neighbor on my west side has 4 dogs, 2 of which bark a lot but they have not bothered me or Patches. They have been there for over a week now so she has become accepting of them.

I think this excerpt from an article by Gordon Gray on Yahoo! Finance puts the last 3 ½ years federal debt increase in terms that everyone should understand. The payoff that he has described is ONLY for the debt increase of $5.389 Trillion not the entire $16.016 Trillion federal debt.
As of Friday, August 31st, the debt stood at $16.016 trillion. Since the president took office, that number has increased by $5.389 trillion. To the extent that this increase in debt burden under the president is ultimately borne by individuals, it is reasonable to apportion the national debt increase on a per capita basis. This amounts to $17,146 per person.
The United States must pay interest on its debt obligations. At present, the average interest rate paid on U.S. debt is 2.62 percent. This rate represents interest owed not only to U.S. creditors in the public, but also to non-marketable securities, such as federal trust funds. The relatively low rate reflects low interest rates set by the Federal Reserve and the global perception of Treasury securities as a virtually riskless investment, which keeps yields at bay. This rate compares quite favorably to consumer credit rates. For example, as of the end of August the average variable-rate credit card APR was 14.52 percent.
Thus any individualized analysis of the recent increase in federal indebtedness depends heavily on interest rate assumptions. Both the low-bound assumption (the current low average federal borrowing rate) and the high-bound assumption (the average credit card rate) reflect a sufficiently high increase in indebtedness under the current administration to require over a decade to fully pay off. Indeed, using the Federal Reserve's pay-off calculator that includes standard assumptions about minimum payment requirements, assuming an individual debt balance of $17,146, and the low-bound interest assumption of 2.62 percent, it would take 18 years to fully repay the debt increase under President Obama, with an initial minimum payment of $343. This payment would diminish over time to reflect a lower principal balance. Under the high-bound interest assumption, it would take an individual 36 years to repay $17,146 in debt with an initial minimum payment of $343.
The bottom line is simple: if an American put $17,000 on her credit card, she would face over 35 years of the burden of repaying. In the past four years, the President has done exactly that.
This is a from a bumper sticker not sighted. I'm not big on bumper stickers but really like this message. UNDER THE REPUBLICANS, MAN EXPLOITS MAN. WITH THE DEMOCRATS, JUST THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE.

Read Will Rogers column 88 years ago: September 7, 1924

Clear sky and colder this morning. Another great day in the forecast today but getting hotter on Sunday, maybe 87°, then cooling quickly to an expected 72 on Tuesday. I will be leaving that for 100° temperatures in Pahrump – what am I thinking?

Continued good Heel efforts by Patches. This morning she did one out of the six as well as I can hope for, it was perfect. She got a treat for that one. She always get praise but I'll now restrict treats to responses that are near perfect. She is such a Good Girl - sometimes.

Yesterday afternoon I had a hankering for a beer, bread and cheese. So, on the way home from our walk Patches and I stopped at the General Store and got a six-pak of Michelob Amber Bock, a chunk of Mexican cheese (the creamy yellow not the white crumbly) and a loaf of bread. The bread was Coeur d'Alene French Baking Co. Cracked Wheat Sourdough.

I was not expecting much from the bread but have been pleasantly surprised. It has a thin crust and not as hard as I would like but the interior texture is very good. It does not have much of a sourdough taste but is flavorful. A pretty Good Bread! The company bakery is in Kent, WA but a Google Search also finds a listing for Salt Lake and/or Murry, UT. I may try to pick up a couple more loaves before I leave here next week.

Didn't do much outside my usual daily routine other than a lot more News reading today. I did not watch nor read President Obama's acceptance speech but some of the analyst, including supporters, have not given him very high marks. I think I have commented in the past that I thought he had lost much of his speaking mojo simply from overexposure and overuse.

This is what he had to say about Israel: Our commitment to Israel's security must not waver, and neither must our pursuit of peace. I am not sure that is going to make the Israelis feel all warm and fuzzy and would not be surprised if they try and take out the Iran nuclear threat in October. An October Surprise for the election!

The Bureau of Labor has released their non-farm job numbers for August, an increase of 96,000, which the media has not dwelled upon. They are focusing on the Unemployment Rate moving down to 8.1%. President Obama will also tout the unemployment rate while Romney will emphasis the lower than expected job increase. The President will probably emphasize that the Unemployment rate fell 0.2% however if you want the same accuracy that the Administration demanded last month the drop was 0.143%.

The monthly report looks even worse when you look at the Bureau's historical data, by month, for Total Employed (which includes farm workers and has not been manipulated quite as much). The trend of the last two months is not a very good sign: May ADDED 422,000, June ADDED 128,000, July LOST 195,000 and August LOST 119,000. There was good news with the Unemployed going down by 250,000 but the bad news was they did not get jobs. Most of them left the Labor Force. However, the increase in Not in the Labor Force of 581,000 was very favorable for the President and contributed greatly to the Unemployment Rate decrease.

If the President can get increases in the Not in the Labor Force of this size during September and October he will go into the election with an Unemployment Rate below 8%, not great but it just might be good enough.

There are some bad numbers in the Manufacturing sector that the President likes to point to as leading this recovery; total Manufacturing had 12,552,000 jobs at the end of January 2009 and has lost 582,000 of them during Obama's first term.

He also takes credit for saving the auto industry; total Motor Vehicles and Parts had 690,700 January 2009 jobs and has added 90,000 during his first term. Those added jobs were at a cost however. Part of the bailout agreement with GM and Chrysler was the closing of approximately 2,000 dealerships which resulted in an estimated 100,000 jobs lost. Then there is the $25 Billion, or about $278,000/job, that GM still owes the government (we taxpayers) for the bailout.

There was a time during our walk this morning that I wished I had my gloves on. Chilly mornings now with nice warm days.

I went back to the General Store again after I had my breakfast and bought a few things. Brought them home and put most of them to use right away. Made up a pot of chili that is now sitting in the Thermal Cooker for the rest of the day. This will give me 3, maybe 4, 'linners' with a week left here.

I'll go over to Cactus Pete's this afternoon and pick up something for my 'linner' today. Then will have to think about what I'm going to do for my other 2-3 before I leave. I want to be on the road with as nearly empty refrigerator as I can because I'll probably camp one night without power along the way.

I did some work on the Will Rogers weekly article links for October, still have more to do. I want to have them ready before I leave here. I'll be busy once I get to Pahrump so it is best to get it done now.

Do the math, Mr. Obama, you've run out of excuses on jobs by John Lott for FoxNews.com refutes the numbers that President Obama uses on the Campaign Trail, in interviews and speeches. The President's memory is very selective and short, John Lott has gone back to refresh our memory. Yet to hear the President tell it now the ONLY reason that jobs are not where we all wish them to be is because the Republicans are blocking his jobs programs.

I might add that I don't believe Romney can deliver the number of jobs that he has been promising either. I don't think he, or anyone else, knows how many jobs might be added IF ALL his policies were to be enacted. The only thing that we do know is that President Obama has not done it and more of the same is unlikely to do it.
With the release Friday morning of the August job numbers there are still 261,000 fewer Americans employed than when Obama became president. Almost a million – 822,000 - fewer Americans have permanent jobs...
Remember back in March 2009, just five weeks after the stimulus was signed into law, President Obama was already declaring: “We’re beginning to see signs of progress.” By May, Obama told Americans: the program was “already seeing results.” In September, Vice President Joe Biden announced: “In my wildest dreams, I never thought [the stimulus] would work this well.” But unemployment just kept on increasing. By April 2010, Obama administration announced the summer of 2010 would become known as the “Summer of Recovery.”
Needless to say, we aren’t now close to the 6% unemployment rate that the Obama administration was predicting after the stimulus passed. And four more jobs programs were passed after the stimulus during Obama’s first two years in office, and positive results were promised each time. Yet, instead, this has been the worst recovery on record...
At the beginning of his administration, Obama promised: “If I don’t have this done in three years, then there’s gonna be a one-term proposition.” Mr. President your time for excuses ended months ago.

Warmer this morning with overcast. That cloud cover dropped a little rain between 9:00 and 10:00 then moved on leaving almost a clear sky. That didn't last very long with more clouds blowing in from the west with a 30% chance of more rain later today.

We did the route toward the golf course but turning north again this morning. It has been a while since we had been on this one. Patches managed to do a perfect Heel again this morning but I think she does them by accident, most of the time she is facing some other direction than I am. She usually does get the distance from my left leg right so that is good.

Did my usual novel and blog reading. Finished catching up to current on one new blog that I have added to my Monthly list and have started another new one. That was about it for the day.

This quote is from ch. 3 of Chris Hedges’ most recent book, Empire of Illusion as posted on Morris Berman's blog posting Feeding The Beast November 28, 2009. I don't see that anything is going to change with the election this November, it is another choice between two elites that only know how to feed the beast.
Obama is a product of this elitist system. So are his degree-laden cabinet members. They come out of Harvard, Yale, Wellesley, and Princeton. Their friends and classmates made huge fortunes on Wall Street and in powerful law firms. They go to the same class reunions. They belong to the same clubs. They speak the same easy language of privilege, comfort, and entitlement....Our power elite has a blind belief in a decaying political and financial system that has nurtured, enriched, and empowered it. But the elite cannot solve our problems. It has been trained only to find solutions, such as paying out trillions of dollars of taxpayer money to bail out banks and financial firms, to sustain a dead system. The elite, and those who work for them, were never taught how to question the assumptions of their age. The socially important knowledge and cultural ideas embodied in history, literature, philosophy, and religion, which are at their core subversive and threatening to authority, have been banished from public discourse... The elite...know only how to feed the beast until it dies. Once it is dead, they will be helpless.

It felt warmer this morning but the high temperature for today and the next 3 days is expected to be in the upper 70s. That is about as good as it gets as far as I am concerned. We had a thunderstorm yesterday afternoon that brought more strong winds than it did rain.

Patches and I got caught in a little sprinkle during our afternoon walk and cut it a little short. This morning I was feeling a bit lazy and did a shorter morning walk also.

After breakfast I went to the General store and picked up a few things. Among them were the only two loaves of Coeur d'Alene French Baking Co. on the shelf. One of them is cracked wheat sourdough, like what I had before, the other is blunt cracked wheat sourdough.

The best that I can tell blunt cracked wheat bread is identical to cracked wheat bread with only one minor exception. The blunt has had the ends of the loaf cut off and they are not included in the package.

The ends are usually referred to as the heel of the loaf and I consider it the better part. Why cut it off? I assume this is done for those people that do not like the heel and don't want to feel guilty about throwing them away – who knows.

James Howard Kunstler has ripped President Obama again in his latest blog posting. He, like Michael Moore, has been blasting the President but both of them will support his re-election come the end of October and will be voting for him. Their justification will be that as bad as the President has been he is better than Romney.
I voted for him (President Obama) in 2008, by the way, since the wish-fulfillment motif moved me, and also because of the horrifying McCain-Palin opposition. In office, then, Mr. Obama quickly proved to be a different breed of porpoise than the voters bargained for. He let the Wall Street privateers run amuck another four years, aided with colossal infusions of conjured-out-of-nothing "money" from the Federal Reserve. He let loose the demons of a high-tech totalitarian "security" state with every sort of electronic surveillance, citizen data-mining, and drone spying that innovation allowed. He stood silent like a Banana Republic store mannequin after the supreme court decided that corporations could buy elections (he could have pushed loudly for legislation or even a constitutional amendment to redefine corporate "personhood"). And of course, he continued to prosecute the absurd war in Afghanistan where, after nine years, US forces are unable to accomplish the only aims of being there: to control the terrain and to moderate the behavior of the people who live there.

It was cold this morning. I'm not sure how cold but it was only 48° when I checked on-line at 7:00 am. While we were walking I wanted my gloves but was also thinking that my wore out wool shirt would have been nice.

After breakfast I got started on what passes for a busy day in my life. No adventure, just household chores that I have been putting off for too long. First I cleaned up the driving portion of Desperado. This included the very dusty dash, all the dog nose prints on both side windows and all the dog hair and dirt on the floorboard.

I then swept up all the dog hair in the bathroom and kitchen area. This is the wood floor portion of my house where the hair balls are most readily seen. That got me primed to attack the toilet cleaning chore that I keep putting off until it becomes real work. I tell myself every time that I need to do this more often and it would not be so bad but just don't do it.

When I finally fought the toilet back into a decent condition once more I washed the floor in the bathroom and kitchen. Then last but not least I swept the carpet in the living room. I'll do the counter tops tomorrow, I have had enough of this housekeeping for today.

I also finished preparing the October links for the Will Rogers weekly articles. There was an listing in one of the articles for which I had to prepare a table to make it look right when rendered using HTML. That took longer than usual so I'm glad that I have got it done.

Back in March 2010 Benjamin Netanyahu was left to stew in a White House meeting room for over an hour after President Barack Obama abruptly walked out of tense talks to have supper with his family. The President has now again snubbed the Prime Minister, it seems that President Obama's diplomatic approach with Israel is 'Do as I Say and Shut Up'. I think this is going to bite him in the ass sooner than later.
The White House has rejected a request by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to meet President Barak Obama in the United States this month, an Israeli official said on Tuesday, after a row erupted between the allies over Iran's nuclear programme.
An Israeli official told Reuters on condition of anonymity that Netanyahu's aides had asked for a meeting when he visits the United Nations this month and "the White House has got back to us and said it appears a meeting is not possible. It said that the president's schedule will not permit that."

It was even colder this morning than yesterday. It was 40° when we got home from our walk at 6:30 so it may have been even colder when we started. I learned my lesson yesterday however and this morning I had on my wool cap, wore gloves and had my wool shirt on. Patches was loving it, frisky as always in cool and/or rainy weather.

I went to Cactus Pete's for breakfast this morning. I only had the makings for one more breakfast at home so I had a choice of eating out either today or tomorrow. I only have one 'linner' left also. Will probably eat that today and go to Cactus Pete's tomorrow afternoon.

We had a neighbor on our west side yesterday that caused Patches a lot of grief. She does not like anything that is new to her experience and this Class A motorhome had a lift beside the entry door. That was enough to bother her but when a disabled boy in a wheelchair was brought down on the lift that really set her off.

I continued my housecleaning by doing the bathroom counter top, sink and mirrors. I didn't do a very good job on the mirrors because I know what the reflected image looks like and perfectly clean mirrors will not change that much. The kitchen counter top are tomorrow, I can not rush into this cleaning thing.

I have finished Galilee by Clive Barker, the latest novel that I have been reading. I recommend this book highly although it is strange. Not the story line but the characters that play their part in the story. I was constantly thinking about how did the author come up with this concept for his characters and how did he keep them 'in' character. A GOOD read!

Why is it that journalists, and/or their editors, no longer know the English language? Today Yahoo! Finance posted a story from Bloomberg headlined U.S. Envoy to Libya Killed as Protests Flare in North Africa. The story then begins: The U.S. ambassador to Libya was killed in an attack on the consulate in Benghazi ...

If I know the difference between an envoy and an ambassador why is it that the editor at Bloomberg, a university journalism graduate I presume, does not. An envoy is a representative of a government who is sent on a special diplomatic mission or a minister plenipotentiary assigned to a foreign embassy, ranking next below the ambassador.

The two words are not synonyms and words have meaning why has the lame stream media lost the ability to use them properly?

The forecast was for a low of 40° this morning with a frost warning across all of central and northern Nevada. It was 39 at 6:45 when we got home from or walk this morning and stayed chilly until 9:00 if you were in the shade.

That is where I was when I dumped holding tanks and took on fresh water. I then cleaned the kitchen counter tops, sink and stove top. Also had to sweep the kitchen floor again where I had tracked in grass clippings from the freshly mowed lawn. That completes all my chores so I'm now ready to leave early tomorrow.

The announcement by 'Big Ben' Bernanke of the Federal Reserve's QEIII gave gold and silver a big boost and the price of Hecla spiked also. That gave me an opportunity to close out my short Put position and I sent in an order to do so. I don't know if my buy offer will be filled today but the last trades were very close.

If my order is filled I think I sit for a few days and see if prices far back. I think they have gone 'a bridge too far' and I will have a good chance for selling another Put. We will see what happens over the next few days.

I made up my 3x5 travel card for the next couple of days. Didn't need to look up what highways to take, I have been across northern NV many times. What I was making note of was where I would stop to eat and where I would get gas and how much.

When I was driving my Mini Cooper or Scion xB I never payed much attention to gas prices. With Desperado getting about 1/4th the mpg it has become much more important to me. I use Gas Buddy to check prices along my route and then decide where I'll fill up or where I will only buy enough to get me to a cheaper station.

My liberal readers will take issue with this quote from The New World Disorder an Opinion in The Wall Street Journal simply because that is where it was published. However, the lesson has been taught over and over throughout history and wishful thinking can not make it disappear.
Mr. Obama also came to office saying, and apparently believing, that a more deferential America would be better respected around the world. He will finish his term having disproved his own argument. The real lesson of the last four years—a lesson as much for Republican isolationists as for Democrats who want to lead from behind—is the ancient one that weakness is provocative.
Then there is this from James Taranto's column also in The Wall Street Journal.
In his famous 2009 Cairo speech, portentously titled "A New Beginning," President Obama declared:
I've come here to Cairo to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world, one based on mutual interest and mutual respect, and one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles--principles of justice and progress; tolerance and the dignity of all human beings.
As wonderful as justice and progress and tolerance and dignity may be, America's central principles are principles of freedom....The idea that a submissive-sounding president could set things right in the Muslim world always struck us as far-fetched. Yesterday's events render it indefensible. This looks like the end of the "New Beginning."

It was a lot warmer this morning, I think in the upper 40s. Didn't have my cap or my gloves on and was comfortable. But we also did a short potty walk so I was not out in the cold for very long.

Got home, unhooked from electric and on the road by 6:00. It was a longer day than I like and I am feeling it now. A total of 371 miles on a simple route: US93, US6 & US95.no pic

Stopped in Wells, NV at Four Ways Casino for breakfast and then in Ely, NV to fill up with gas.

I knew that I could make it from Ely to Pahrump without getting any more gas but I don't like to drop below ¼ of a tank. The on board generator will not work if the gas level drops below ¼. I also knew that gas was expensive in Tonopah so I planned on getting only 10 gallons which was $4.159/gallon.

Then made my overnight parking lot camp at The Banc Club. The ONLY thing that it has that I can recommend is FREE overnight parking. They have no restaurant, only a sports bar that had almost nothing that was listed on the menu. I finally settled for a bowl of chili and some fries with a couple of beers to assuage the disappointment in today's 'linner'.

I have a Verizion connection here but it is VERY slow. I hope I can get this posted today if not it will be tomorrow. I am also taking this opportunity to exercise my generator. It started hard but once it was running it sounds good. I will probably add some more load on it by turning on my A/C to see if it can still handle it. It is in the low 80s and I have a breeze so I can make it through the night without the A/C.

My order to buy Hecla Puts yesterday was filled, but the stock price continued to advance today which is NOT what I wanted to happen. I'll give it a couple o f days next week and see if it reverses which is what I would like to now see. If it does not then I make a decision.

This latest trade was possible again because the Hecla stock price has gone up sharply and I was able to buy the Jan13 Put for $0.56/share giving me a profit of $0.55/share. If I had done nothing with the first Puts that I sold they would still be open until December and I would keep the $0.74/share that I sold them for. By making the two trades I have now banked $1.05/share, have no open position and can look for another possibility.

I think Kimberley A. Strassel has identified how Romney is going to loose this election in her Opinion Mr. Romney, Trust Your Pants written for The Wall Street Journal. Romney is campaigning on the assumption that the economy is so bad and President Obama has failed to fulfill so many of his promises that he has the election won. President Obama is campaigning by saying Romney is a bad, bad person so he thinks he has this re-election in the bag and is starting the campaign for his third term.
In the classic 1968 film "Once Upon a Time in the West," a villainous Henry Fonda shoots one of his lackeys, in part for the sin of wearing both a belt and suspenders. How do you trust a man, muses Fonda, who "can't even trust his own pants?"
Mitt Romney is slipping in the polls because, when it comes to his own policies, he is once again wearing a belt, suspenders, and even some elasticized waistbands. The bold Romney who picked Paul Ryan as a catalyst to run on ideas has been ousted by the return of the careful Romney who wants this race to be about Barack Obama. And America is unwilling to trust a man who seems unwilling to trust his own agenda.
The re-emergence of the well-belted Romney began at the GOP convention, where he delivered a speech that had been pared away to nothing but a fleeting reference to his policies. It was on vivid display, too, in Mr. Romney's Sunday appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press," in which he managed to use 30 minutes of prime time to talk mainly of flotsam, as well as (news flash!) how bad Mr. Obama had made the economy.
As for how he would create "more jobs" and "higher income," Mr. Romney wasn't saying. His references to his "tax policy" served mainly to explain what it doesn't do. He vowed to replace ObamaCare with his "own plan"—which is? He explained he had "big policy differences" with the president on Afghanistan. Those differences are "important." So important that he moved to the next question.

Ihis morning was the warmest that I have had in almost a month with warmer to come. Patches and I did a short potty walk with me trying to use the restroom in the Banc Club only to find it locked up. It claims to be a Casino but is really a sports bar that is NOT open 24/7.

We were still able to get back on the road by 6:00. Almost two hours then before breakfast in Beatty, NV at the Denny's inside the Stagecoach Casino. There is a Mom-n-Pop place on the south edge of town that I considered but was not sure if they were going to be open.

Today was only 171 miles on US95, NV160 & Pahrump City Streets.no pic

It was good that it was shorter than yesterday because my shoulders were stiff and sore still from that long day.

Arrived in Pahrump a little after 10:00 with my first stop at The UPS Store to pick up my mail, including my new wool shirt. It is not as heavy weight as the one I wore out but it will work with layers just fine. The second stop was at Little Caesar's, almost next door, to get a pizza for my 'linner' today. The cupboards are bare and I wanted to get to the RV Park before noon.

As it turned out that was not necessary. I thought the office was open until noon but not during the summer, they will be staying open on Saturday starting October 1st. I did manage to get a space, the same one that I had back in March – April, but need to finish up the paperwork and pay on Monday.

The first order of business was to get the A/C working. It was 93° at 11:30 with an expected high of 97 today. The 10 day forecast is for slightly cooler highs in the lower 90s. With the low temperatures in the mid or low 60s our morning walks should be very nice but we will be doing short potty walks in the afternoons until it cools down more.

What went wrong? Why is there still instability in the relationship between the USA and the Muslim world when we have a President with the credentials that he touted back in 2007? I thought that the al Qaeda terrorist threat was eliminated upon the death of Osama. It was none of those things, like all of Obama's failures someone else is to blame. In this case it was an offensive video.

Then-Senator Barack Obama made the case for an Obama Presidency on November 21, 2007 by saying he was uniquely qualified to bring stability to America's relationships in the Muslim world because he lived in an Islamic country during his youth and his half-sister is Muslim.

Might it have something to do with the President bragging about assassinating Osama bin Laden? Or, maybe it can be traced back to the story about the President shuffling through the 'deck of cards' for future assassinations? No, it was not those things the President did it was a video.
On Friday, White House spokesman Jay Carney told the world that the violent protests in Cairo and Benghazi and elsewhere were a “response not to United States policy, and not obviously the administration or the American people,” but were “in response to a video, a film we have judged to be reprehensible and disgusting.” Carney repeated the point for emphasis: “This is not a case of protests directed at the United States at large or at U.S. policy, but in response to a video that is offensive to Muslims.”
Carney’s comments lie outside the range of plausible spin, even by Obama administration standards, and if his bosses believe them—as we fear they do—are simply delusional. .. They all send the message to America’s enemies that if you kill our diplomats and lay siege to the our embassies, the first move the American government will make is to denounce . . . Americans. Our leaders apparently believe that the way to protect Americans from extremists and terrorists abroad is to tell other Americans to shut up.

A very nice morning. Patches and I walked counterclockwise around the square ½ mile where the Park is located. The number of dogs has changed since back in April, as well as their location. Patches has also changed, she handled their barking at her with aplomb. No charging toward them, no returned barking – I was so proud. I hope the behavior continues.

When we got home I went to the laundry and got that taken care of. It was good that I waited because the washer and dryer cost me about ½ what they would have been in Jackpot. I was in need however with only one change of clean clothes remaining.

We were then off to Lakeside Casino for breakfast. They have almost the same menu that they had before the Nugget bought them. I didn't get their biscuits and gravy this morning but they still have it and they have added a Sunday Champagne Buffet which I also did not have.

From there we went to town. Did my yearly clothes buying trip to Wal*Mart where I bought a new pair of pants. Picked up a TracFone card to keep my phone working for another 3 months.

Then went to Smith's were I picked up groceries for the next week. Started a Thermal Cooker full of cream of chicken soup with added chicken and mustard greens (wanted kale but they had none). This will last me about 3 days and then I'll make up another pot.

It was already up to 85° by 10:30 when we headed for home. Was over 90 by noon so I'll have the A/C on for the rest of the day with the expected high to reach 97. It was cool last night after about 8:00 so it is fine sleeping temperatures but hot days with short potty walks in the afternoon.

I didn't do much for the rest of the day but did get caught up with my Daily blogs. I sometimes get behind when I'm on the road and the Internet connection in Tonopah was very slow so I did not even try.

This is from a CNN story.
Three days before the deadly assault on the United States consulate in Libya, a local security official says he met with American diplomats in the city and warned them about deteriorating security.
Then Politico reported this.
Libya President Mohamed Yousef El-Magariaf said Sunday that 50 arrests have been made in connection with last week's "preplanned" attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi that left U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead. "The way these perpetrators acted and moved -- I think we, and they're choosing the specific date for this so-called demonstration, I think we have no, this leaves us with no doubt that this was pre-planned, determined," Magariaf said on CBS's "Face the Nation."
Yet our Ambassador to the United Nations continues to 'spin' the administration's story on ABC that the attack was ALL about the disgusting video.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi was not premeditated, directly contradicting top Libyan officials who say the attack was planned in advance. “Our current best assessment, based on the information that we have at present, is that, in fact, what this began as, it was a spontaneous – not a premeditated – response to what had transpired in Cairo,” Rice told me this morning on “This Week.”
I am troubled by President Obama speaking during the Transfer of Remains Ceremony at Andrews Air Force Base where the bodies of the four Americans – including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens – were being returned from Libya. Two of these bodies were Seals, was family approval given? His appearance suggests that this was another 'never let a crisis go to waste' moment and is a reminder that he did the same thing when 30 Seals were returned to Dover a little over a year ago.

Under a Pentagon policy set in 2009, media coverage at the Dover base is allowed only when family members of the war dead approve. In the case of multiple sets of remains returning as a group, photographers take pictures of those approved caskets only and are ushered away before the remains of any troops whose families declined coverage are brought out of the plane. Note: 19 of the 30 families did not approve and pictures were taken of all the caskets - it was a Presidential photo-op.

It was 63° this morning when Patches and I walked counterclockwise around the square ½ mile north of the Park. This was the most densely dog populated route that we walked back in April and it is even more so now.

Patches handled all their barking again with no charging toward them, no returned barking. Then she blew it with a dog in the Park's dog run when we were almost home. I was still VERY happy with how she responded to all the dogs along the route.

Went to the Park Club House for morning coffee and saw the same group that came in every morning back in April. Two of them had also just arrived back in the Park this past weekend so the end of summer migration seems to be on.

I then needed to do a lot of running around town to make appointments. But first I stopped at the Pahrump Town Diner for breakfast. Then to Leroy's Auto where I got an appointment for next Monday the 24th for servicing Desperado.

The next stop was at ClearVision where I will get an eye exam and new glasses next Thursday the 27th. That almost fills next week with dental, medical and eye appointments plus Desperado's care. Wanted to get a shampoo appointment for Patches but the groomer was closed today.

I did stop and fill up my propane tank. This was the first that I have added since I filled up at the same place here in Pahrump back in March. It only took 10.5 gallons which I thought was very good for 6 months, but I used the heater very little so it was mostly the cook stove usage.

We got home at 10:00 and it was already up to 83° with an expected 93 for the high which will match yesterday. The next 4 days all forecast to be in the upper 90s with no cooling until late next week when it may drop down to only 90.

This is praise for Why America Failed from the back dust jacket cover. I have not read it but have read all of Morris Berman's blog postings from his archive. He is far more liberal than myself but I find that I agree with more of what he writes than what I disagree with.
Morris Berman is one of our most prescient and important social and cultural critics. He marries a laser-like intelligence with a deep moral core. His writing is as lucid and crisp as it is insightful. His newest book, Why America Failed, rips open the dark and dying carcass of empire. His analysis is sobering and often depressing. But the truth at this stage in the game is depressing, very depressing. Those who refuse to face this truth because it is unpleasant, because it does not inspire happy thoughts or offer false hope, are in flight from the real. The collective retreat into self-delusion has transformed huge swaths of the American populace into a peculiar species of adult-children who live in a Peter Pan world of make believe where reality is never permitted to be an impediment to desire. It is too bad Berman, who sees and writes about all this with a stunning clarity, lives in Mexico. It gets lonely up here.—Chris Hedges, author of Death of the Liberal Class and Empire of Illusion
I have started to read the columns by Chris Hedges and I'm not in agreement with his positions nearly as much. I will give him a chance and keep reading since I have only read about one year beginning in 2006.

Patches and I walked an out-n-back route along the west and south side of the square ½ mile east of the Park this morning. There was only one property that had any barking dogs and Patches was almost good; she did lunge once but responded to my command and did not bark in reply.

On the return she was confronted by two dogs off leash. One of them, which I think was a Pit Bull, wanted to get up close and personal with Patches and I. She was not going to let that happen and told him to back off in no uncertain terms. I think she went into guard mode and was protecting me but responded well to my commands. She was a Good Girl!

The next 5 day forecast has been revised, for the worse. Today and tomorrow are now expected to be 99° then two days of 102 and one more at 99. Gradually cooling to 90 and 91 by later next week. I knew it was going to be hot but not this hot. Not happy!

I traded two of my books yesterday and two more today at the Park library. They have a very large selection here that are all grouped by categories and then shelved by author. It probably rivals some of the small town libraries that I have been in.

The high temperature forecast for today was revised upward once again to 100° but the two days of 102 were reduced to only 99 and 100. Kind of makes me look forward to next week when we may get some low 90s.

Our walk this morning was clockwise around the square ½ mile that the Park is in. We had another confrontation with two off leash dogs but Patches provided a strong warning to the one that approached us and it then went on its way. There is a definite difference in her posture and bark when dealing with these loose dogs versus when she wants to go meet another dog and play.

Have started to read my Monthly blogs again. I usually forget about them for well over a month but this time it has only been about 5-6 weeks. Maybe it won't take me quite so long to catch up this time.

The stockpiling of ammo by Federal Agencies continues. It is only Alex Jones Infowars.com that is concerned about this with a complicit lame stream media providing covering 'spin' on what is happening.
Following controversy over its purchase of around 1.2 billion bullets in the last six months alone, the Department of Homeland Security has put out a new solicitation for over 200 million more rounds of ammunition, some of which are designated to be used by snipers. The number of bullets purchased by the DHS now adds up to a staggering 1.4 billion over the last six months.
Following a barrage of questions about why the federal agency has purchased so many bullets, the DHS has refused to respond and even gone to the lengths of censoring information relating to solicitations for ammunition. The mainstream media responded to the controversy by focusing on a purchase of 174,000 bullets by the Social Security Administration while completely ignoring the fact that the DHS had purchased well over a billion rounds.

Yesterday afternoon Patches and I did the circuit inside the Park with a stop at the big Dog Run. Just as we were leaving a fellow brought his pug over. Back in April Patches and this pug would go at each other from their respective side of the fence like they would really tear into each other.

I had patches sit and let the pug come through the gate and they did their doggie meet a greet with no issues at all. Then when we left they did their barking and carrying on behavior again from their side of the fence. Strange dogs, both of them.

There is a group of people that take their dogs to the Dog Park almost every morning at 10:00. Today I took Patches over there to join the group. I got her inside the gate and had her sit and let the other dogs approach her and it went VERY well. She was the BIG dog so I think most of the other dog owners were afraid for their tiny dogs but everyone got along great. I'll be exposing her to this group as much as I can from now on to get her more socialized; so far so good.

I sold Hecla Dec12 $8 Puts today for $1.54/share. I waited until today to see if the upward movement in the stock price was going to hold after Big Ben made his QE3 announcement and it has. So, I now once again wait and see what the market might do.

How Obama torched our standing in the Arab world by Liz Peek points out what was obvious and what the Administration and it's lap dog media does not want known. Jay Carney has now admitted, a week late, that the attack in Libya was a 'terrorist attack' but continues to claim that it was not planned. That is also not credible.
In pinning the blame for the attacks entirely on an unknown film maker, White House spokesman Jay Carney dismissed the notion that the uprisings reflected hostility to the US, or to our foreign policy. That does not seem credible.
The reality, which the media shrinks from telling, is that during the past three years regard for our country has dropped precipitously around the world – and it has nothing to do with an anti-Muslim film. The Pew organization tells us that the number of people in Muslim countries who hold favorable views towards the US stood at 15% in June—down from 25% when President Obama took office. Only 24% of those surveyed in those lands have confidence in Obama’s policies, down from 33% three years ago. Please note: this is in Muslim countries – where the president extended the most emphatic overture of his presidency.
There is a huge disconnect between how Democrats and the rest of the American public view the economy if this recent study can be believed. What economic news did 16% of Democrats read, or hear about, that changed their opinion from August to September?
A recent study from the Pew Research Center found that just 15 percent of Democrats believe that recent economic news is mostly poor, a percentage that took a significant drop from the 31 percent of Democrats polled last month who did think that economic news was mostly bad. According to the study, the 15-percent clip is among the lowest percentages during President Barack Obama’s nearly four years in office.
But with those citizens with Republican leanings and no political leanings at all, the outlook remains the same. Sixty percent of Republicans find that most of the economic news is bad. Among independents, the percentage is 36 percent. Both of these data sets remain virtually unchanged from a month ago, according to the study.

Yesterday afternoon I introduced Patches to a BIG dog that lives near by in the Park. It went well with Patches but not so well for the other dog. He apparently has had a bad experience with a Pit Bull and with coyotes in the past so was not the friendliest dog that Patches has meet. We left before anything untoward came about.

On our way home this morning I saw two dogs off leash but Patches did not and they stayed away from us. We went back to the Dog Park morning meeting again and after Patches acted a fool upon entering she calmed down quickly and got along with everyone in grand style. All the other owners have fallen in love with her because she is well mannered and such a pretty girl.

At about 9:00 this morning I had a knock on my door and the Park Manager told me I needed to go to the Office. When I got there I was told that the owners of the space that I was in are coming and I would have to move. So, back to Desperado where I only had to un-hook from electric and drive to my new space. I'm now a little farther from the entrance, a little farther from the showers but closer to the Club House. Not an issue.

The President continues to pat himself on the back for the 4.5 million jobs that he has created but that number has been chosen from a very select time period and is for only private non-farm jobs. If ALL jobs and his ENTIRE term in office are considered then the numbers do not look so good. However, he has made great progress in building his 'dependency' base; very few of these people will vote to remove their benefactor.
Since January 2009, when President Barack Obama took office, the net change jobs has been negative (-1.3 million), while 5.7 million workers and dependents have been awarded disability and a whopping 15.1 million have been added to the food stamp rolls.
"A total of 46,670,373 Americans are now on food stamps," according to the minority side of the Senate Budget Committee. "The food stamp program has doubled in size since 2008 and quadrupled since 2001."

It only reached 96° for a high yesterday and the forecast has dropped predicted highs down to the mid and low 90s for the next 10 days. Maybe we are going to get a break and have some cooler temperatures soon.

Patches and I both seemed to need a break today. I stayed in bed for an extra 15 minutes although I was awake. Patches was awake also but she was not pestering me to get up which indicated that a rest day for her would be good also. We just went to the Dog Park for a potty walk and she had a few minutes of running around with a tennis ball in her mouth.

Went to town around 6:30 with a stop at the Nugget for breakfast. This is right next door to Smith's where I went next to stock up on groceries for the coming week. Then stopped at the dog groomer that I used once before only to find that she had moved but only a couple of blocks so I found her new location and made an appointment for next week. I now have an appointment for every day Sunday thru Friday.

Called the DAV yesterday and made an appointment for their shuttle to take me to Las Vegas on Wednesday for my visit with the Orthopedic Clinic there. I don't know where it is and it would cost me over $50 in gas to get there and back so I'm going to take advantage of the DAV shuttle.

There is a Chow Mix dog on the property to the north of the Park that has always come charging up to the fence and barking at Patches and I. Yesterday afternoon he made an appearance again but this time he walked up to the fence and did not bark, just watched us walk past him. Patches gave him a casual look and kept up her very peaceful walk. Improvements by all parties involved!

She was also much better when she approached the Dog Park this morning. The first couple of times she was pulling on the leash heavily, today not quite so much. The first couple of times she also barked at the other dogs when I got her inside the Park, today she went inside sat when I told her to and not a bark out of her. She can be such a Good Dog.

It seems that Romney's fix for the housing market is to blow a new 'housing bubble'. The 'sensible regulation' comment makes me think that was what got us into this mess where banks were lending to anyone with a pulse. I'm not sure more of the same is what we really need.
Campaigning in Las Vegas, GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Friday gave President Barack Obama an "F" on the economy and proposed a five-point plan to revive the housing market in hard-hit Nevada..
Romney said he would reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to protect taxpayers from more risk and to provide a long-term, sustainable future for housing finance...
Replace the Dodd-Frank Act with "sensible regulation" that could make it easier for banks to approve mortgage loans to families with good credit...

Our morning visit with the other dogs at the Dog Park this morning was not as peaceful as the prior three. We arrived earlier than in the past and when a Cocker entered he took exception to Patches being there. There has been no problem between them on the previous three days. The only guess is that he found her to be intruding on HIS space. Who knows, dogs will be dogs.

A blog friend and his wife that have a home here in Pahrump have agreed to keep Patches on Wednesday when I go to to Las Vegas. Today we went over for a very nice lunch and a meeting between Patches and their dog and cat. It went very well with Patches following Don and Judy around like she had known them all her life and no problems between the animals.

Did nothing else exciting today. Resting up for the busy week I have scheduled starting tomorrow.

Thomas Sowell made the same point in his column of September 12, 2012 Depending on Dependency that I was commenting on a couple of days ago. Those voters dependent upon the Federal government are not going to vote against the President that is their benefactor and the one that is promising to give them more.
Although the big word on the left is "compassion," the big agenda on the left is dependency. The more people who are dependent on government handouts, the more votes the left can depend on for an ever-expanding welfare state.
Optimistic Republicans who say that widespread unemployment and record numbers of people on food stamps hurt President Obama's reelection chances are overlooking the fact that people who are dependent on government are more likely to vote for politicians who are giving them handouts.

Patches did not seem very excited about getting up and doing a walk this morning. That was just as well because I needed to be at my first appointment at 8:00 this morning.

We went for just a potty walk to the Dog Park where she attended to her toilette in a reasonably good time. She is so picky that some mornings we will do a 2 mile walk and she can not find a place that suits her.

Drove into town and had breakfast at the Nugget again. I was tempted to go to Lakeside but it was only 6:30 and I vaguely remember that they did not open until 7:00. That may have changed but I didn't want to chance it.

From there we went to Leroy's Auto to get Desperado serviced. The usual oil change, filter and lube and they saved me a few dollars by blowing a lot of bugs out of the air filter. Also had the transmission oil changed for the first time. I got a sample of the old and sent it off for analysis to see if I may have anything bad going on in the transmission.

That took a long time but Patches was VERY good while we waited. She had to greet everyone that came in but most of the time she laid on the floor by my feet while I sat and read. I think she is wore out from all the excitement of yesterday.

I compared my bill today with Statkus Engines Performance in Albuquerque, NM last year and my service was a little cheaper here in Pahrump. I recommend both places for good service by honest auto repair shops, something that is hard to find anymore.

It was 94° for a high yesterday with today expected to be about the same. However, tomorrow is forecast to be 88, IF it happens that is the lowest high since I have been here. It is also a fluke with all the other days in the 10 day forecast still expected to be in the low 90s.

Patches and I walked the route that was a gauntlet of barking dogs last week. It was not quite as bad this morning but Patches did get tested and she responded very well. Then right after we entered the Park she approached a BIG dog, maybe a Mastiff, that she wanted to go meet. Barked at him, tried to lunge; just acted the reactive dog fool.

Went through my usual morning routine of cooking breakfast and reading my Daily blogs. Then had to gather up all the paperwork that I thought I would need at the dentist and got there about 30 minutes early to fill out all their new patient forms. I found out that my Reno office did not send copies of my records or they were lost on this end.

The dentist did the cleaning rather than a hygienist although he did have an assistant manning the suction hoses. Then a different assistant came in and did the polishing. She did not impress me as being very skilled, perhaps new to the trade.

Got home a little before noon with the temperature up to only 81° which was good because I had left Patches in Desperado while at the dentist. I was lucky that today was cooler or I would have had to run the generator and A/C for her while I was getting my teeth cleaned.

I also found that I had acquired a neighbor while I was gone. They were just getting set up so I had a good chance to introduce Patches to them. Maybe she will now not do her Neighborhood Watch Commander impersonation every time she sees them around their 5th wheel.

Today was a long day for me and from the way Patches has acted since I got her home it was a tiring day for her also.

We were both up at about 04:15. I feed us both an early breakfast and then took Patches for a potty walk to the Dog Park. She ran around a little bit which was a good thing, it burned off a little bit of her early morning exuberance.

Don came by and picked her up at 05:45 which I felt bad about. I had no choice however because the DAV shuttle came for me at 05:50. There were 5 of us to be dropped of at 3 different widely scattered locations with the first appointment at 8:00.

Mine was for 9:00 at the Mike O'Callaghan Federal Hospital Orthopedic Clinic at Nellis Air Force Base. We got there a few minutes after 8:00 and a nurse saw me first at about 8:30. The PA then saw me soon after 9:00 and I was through and started waiting for a shuttle pick up at 9:45 that did not happen until almost 11:30. Got home at 1:30 and had patches back by 2:00.

The PA said that I probably did not have a 'rotator cuff' tear and asked me if it was hurting enough that I wanted to be cut on. I told him no, that I had been reasonably pain free since I got the inflammation under control. He told me that what I had been doing was for the best and to put off surgery as long as I could.

Gave me a prescription that was almost always a cure for a future flare up of inflammation. If/when the drugs no longer work it is then time to cut but not before. Was honest about the chances of surgery making it worse rather than better so I should defer that option as long as I can. All Good News, or the best I could hope for!

Don said that Patches was a great house guest. They went for a walk and when she was wandering around like she was nervous he let her run and/or snoop around in his huge back yard. She is welcome back any time but as I said she is wore out and has been sleeping on the couch since we got home.

Patches and I did our morning 2 mile walk today which we have missed a couple days this week. When we got home I fed her breakfast and then went to town and had mine at the Saddle West Casino restaurant. They have just your normal breakfast fare but at good prices.

We then stopped at the VA Clinic here in Pahrump and I gave pharmacy the prescription that I got yesterday in Las Vegas. I told them to mail it to me and had to argue my position that I did not have to have the drugs today or tomorrow. I have lived without them since April, I can live 5 more days and then I will ONLY take them IF I have another inflammation flare up.

I had about an hour to wait for my eye appointment so I did that in their parking lot. This gave me enough time to read all my Daily blogs. I was also lucky that the morning remained cool so I had all the windows in Desperado open and Patches was comfortable during the 1.5 hours I was gone.

A full eye exam revealed no serious problems. I was told that I'm starting to develop cataracts but it is a very rare 69 year old person that does not. No need to do anything at this time and I can only hope to live long enough that I will need to have the surgery. HA

Will pick up my new prescription glasses in new frames in about a week or 10 days. I got progressive lens again which seem to be much more expensive than I remember. It has been quite a few years but with virtually no inflation I can't understand why I think the price has gone up. The frames were reasonable enough and are a slightly different style – give me a new look.

The last stop of the day was at a upholster that is just north of the Park. I'm having him make a cushion for the storage bench that sits near my coach door. Also getting the door trim covered with the same material and put it back up around the door. It is some very thin plywood now covered with an ugly fabric.

The rest of the day was devoted to more blog reading and trying to stay cool. It is still in the low to mid-90s with the chance of it dropping down into the 80s next week. I'm ready for some cooler days, the nights are fine but still too hot during the day.

Read Will Rogers column 88 years ago: September 28, 1924

We went through our usual morning routine. Then spent some time web browsing and reading before going to my last appointment this week.

Patches went into the groomer for a bath to make her pretty and get some good smelly stuff put on her. She also got a neck kerchief for being such a good and pretty dog. The groomer told me again that if there ever came a time that I had to give Patches up that she would “take her in a heart beat”.

It was then home, get the A/C going and try to stay cool. It was already 88° by the time we got home with the expected high to be 91. Monday thru Wednesday are going to be hotter yet which I hope is the last of summer. It is forecast to then drop down into the upper 80s.

I am finishing up a batch of flat beef (hamburger) and onion enchiladas that I made earlier this week. Tomorrow when I go grocery shopping I'm going to pick up some ingredients for a batch of quiche to go with my big salad for 'linners'.

I have been buying frozen southern home fries (diced potatoes) for my breakfast scrambles. Tomorrow I'm going to get a couple of sweet potatoes to try for future breakfasts. Going to give up bead also and will be commenting on how these meal changes work out.

We went out and back to the west again this morning. There was only one place that had barking dogs; a big German Shepard and two little rat dogs. They barked at us going and coming with the two rat dogs making the most noise.

I was going to go to the Club House for coffee, make breakfast at home and then go for groceries. On the way past the Dog Park I stopped for a minute to talk to one of the usual 10:00 group and she told me that there was a parade in town that would make it almost impossible to get to Smith's.

I left for town as soon as I got home with a stop at Saddle West Casino for breakfast. Had their Hevoes Rancheros this morning; don't think I'll be doing that again. Was on my way to Smith's by 8:00 and there were people already stacking out their places along the curb for the 10:00 parade.

Got in and got out with my groceries. Then stopped at the Smith's gas station were I used up my Reward points that would have expired tomorrow. Took the back way home, part of it was now marked as a Detour, to avoid the growing crowd along NV160.

That had us back in plenty of time for me to mess with my electric hook-up. I had a hard time getting any electric from the Park electric pedestal to my electric outlets. Finally checked the circuit breakers inside Desperado and found that was my problem; not the Surge Protector, not the Park. Maybe I'll remember to check that earlier next time?

We then went to the Dog Park for the first time in almost a week. The dog that didn't like Patches the last time we were there was not all that friendly again this morning but at least there was no fight. A little yappy dog was causing Patches some grief until its owner put on a shock collar and gave it a couple of hits. After that it acted like Patches had done the shocking and was a dog to be left alone. HA

Cooked up some chicken breasts that I had frozen from last week then started my quiche. This is a modified crustless recipe that I found on the web, sort of an experiment on my part. IF it turns out to be eatable I'll tell you what I did tomorrow. IF NOT, then I'll try again next week.

Nothing new or different about our morning routine. I have now added going to the Dog Park as part of the morning ritual. Patches is tugging at the leash with anticipation every time we go now. Then when she gets there she does a quick smell-how-are-you, grabs a tennis ball to chew on and run around with and ignores the dogs.

I diced up the sweet potatoes and parboiled them this morning. I think I'll try some in my morning breakfast scramble tomorrow. I have some diced frozen potatoes left but if the sweet potatoes work out that will be the last of them that I buy (for awhile at least).

The quiche was a partial success. It tastes pretty good but I need to change the cooking. The recipe that I modified said to preheat the oven to 375° and the bake for 45 minutes. I tried that in my Roaster and the sides of the quiche ended up a very dark brown, not quite burnt but close enough that some people might think so.

My concoction yesterday was Anchovy, Feta Cheese and Sun Dried Tomato plus all the other quiche ingredients but using Eggbeater substitute for the eggs. I think I'll be doing a little more experimenting with ingredient proportions but was reasonably happy with how it turned out.

I have been chastised on a few occasions, usually by Liberals, for posting comments and quotes that were critical of President Obama. This is probably the best defense that I can offer, it is a shame that I was not smart enough or clever enough to do so.

I now offer it using the words of Will Rogers: “I generally give the party in power, whether Republican or Democrat, the more digs because they are generally doing the country more damage, and besides I don’t think it is fair to jump too much on the fellow who is down. He is not working, he is only living in hopes of getting back in on the graft in another four years, while the party in power is drawing a salary to be knocked.”
